AKRON, OHIO- The first place Philadephia Force were too much for the Akron Racers as the Force took game one of a Fourth of July doubleheader, 3-2, at Firestone Stadium.
The Racers fall to 9-9 while Philadelphia improves to 14-4. Akron had won eight of their last 10 coming into this contest.
Philadelphia’s Clare Burnum led off the game with a double and a Sharonda McDonald single brought her home. Later in the inning a Chelsea Spencer sacrifice fly plated McDonald to make the score 2-0.
In the top of the third inning, aggressive base running by Philadephia, and poor decision making by the Racers, would lead to McDonald scoring again to make the score 3-0.
Akron finally got on the board in the sixth inning when a one-out Kristen Butler walk was followed by Susan Ogden’s third home run of the season, cuttting the deficit to 3-2. That would be as close as Akron would get.
Philadelphia’s top two in the lineup controlled the game by reaching base seven out of eight times to the plate. Burnum had had two hits, two walks, and scored a run. McDonald had two singles, a double, two runs scored, and a run batted in.
Angel Shamblin started for the Racers and got the loss to fall to 2-2 on the season. Shamblin lasted three and two-thirds innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits. Radara McHugh came on in relief and pitched superb. McHugh went two and two-thirds innings, and did not allow a run, by scattering five hits and two walks. Shamblin returned in the seventh to work out of jam by retiring the last two Force batters.
Philadelphia started Megan Gibson, who came into the game with a 3-0 record and a 0.30 ERA. Gibson did not disappoint, throwing a complete game to get the win, allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits while striking out nine.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow to conclude the four game series. Tomorrow night is breast cancer awareness night and the Racers fourth Fox Sports Network’s national game of the week. The festivities wrap up with a post game fireworks display.
