Riptide win 4-3 over Racers for second straight night

AKRON, Ohio — The Racers sent four pitchers to the circle at Firestone Stadium on Friday night, but it wasn’t enough as the New England Riptide (12-15) stole one from Akron (12-11) in the final inning 4-3.
Racers starter Jamee Jaurez pitched two plus innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and was relieved by North Carolina product Radara McHugh who took the Racers through the next 2.1 innings until Angel Shamblin took over for her in the top of the fifth.
Shamblin left the game in the seventh to give way to Racer ace Angela Tincher with the game tied and a runner on second. Tincher was unable to hold the last place Riptide as outfielder Gina Carbonatto singled home the winning run, giving Shamblin (2-3) the loss.
Veronica Wootson provided the power for the Racers as she hit her fourth homerun on the season during the bottom of the second inning to put the Racers on the board. The homerun answered a solo shot by New England rightfielder Lisa Modglin in the top half of the inning.
The Riptide regained the lead in the next inning as Jackie Pasquerella led off with a double and was driven home on a base hit by Jessica Merchant. A sacrifice fly by Modglin scored Lyndsey Angus to make the score 3-1.
The Racers bounced back again in the bottom of the fourth when catcher Susan Doepking doubled Kate Robinson home. Their only other run came across the plate in the fifth inning when India Chiles doubled down the left field line and scored on Robinson’s single two batters later.
Reliever Jocelyn Forest (4-6) received the win for the Riptide after taking over for starter Erica Beach in the fourth inning. Forest was able to retire the Racers in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory. She allowed just one run during her three plus innings of work.
The Racers and Riptide will go at it one last time on Saturday night at 7 pm at Firestone Stadium. After that game, the Racers will hit the road for a series against the Riptide in New England.
