CHANTILLY, VA -- Sarah Pauly did it all herself from the circle and used an RBI single by Amber Jackson and home run by Courtney Bures as the Glory clinched a playoff spot for the second season in a row with a 2-0 victory over Akron in the first of the final four-game series at the Westfield Softball Complex.
Pauly struck out 6 in improving to 11-4 on the season, now just one win behind her counterpart Angela Tincher who fell to 12-7 on the season. Tincher, the Virginia Tech grad, was pulled with two out in the bottom of the sixth and allowed two earned runs on six hits.
Nicole Barber went 2-for-4 for the Glory, scoring the eventual game-winning run in the third inning on Jackson's (1-for-1, two walks) single. Bures (1-for-1, home run) was walked twice as was Jackson, each intentionally walked once.
The Glory twice had the bases loaded and failed to score, once in the second inning with nobody out and the other in the fifth with two out. The highlight of the second inning was Sara Larquier's bunt single to the right side that got through to right field and allowed Jackson to head to third on the play.
The Glory and Racers hit the field again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Westfield Softball Complex. Battle of the Bats takes place at 6:15 p.m. This series is the final series the Glory will play at Westfield as the team will move back to George Mason University in the 2009 season to a new stadium.
