AKRON, OH --Akron Racers’ President/GM, Joey Arrietta announced today the hiring of Barb Sherwood as the Racers new field manager. Sherwood replaces Shonda Stanton who resigned to spend more time with her two young daughters and family.

Sherwood recently accepted the assistant coaching position with the Virginia Tech Hokies and will serve as their pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Sherwood spent last season in Tallahassee as the pitching and catching coach at Florida State University, but long-time head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf retired following the season and a new staff was hired.

Prior to her season at FSU, the Pensacola, Fla., native spent two seasons with the University of Wisconsin as an assistant serving as the pitching and catching coach.

Sherwood began her coaching career at Troy University in the fall of 1998 as a student assistant coach, but quickly moved to the graduate assistant level the following year. Upon receiving her Master’s degree in education in 2000, the former four-year letter-winning catcher was named the top assistant at her alma mater.

In 2006 Sherwood made the leap from Alabama to Wisconsin, to join the Badgers’ coaching staff as an assistant and the pitching and catching coach. While there, Wisconsin’s pitching staff ERA was ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten for the 2007 season.

In her lone season at Florida State, she helped senior pitcher Tiffany McDonald earn All-ACC honors as she posted 18 wins and 244 strikeouts while the catchers threw out 14 would-be base stealers.

Sherwood earned her bachelor’s of science degree in physical education from Troy in 1999 and followed-up with a Master’s in education in 2000. Sherwood remains the winningest player in Troy softball history.

“I am looking forward to coaching the Racers. Akron is a 'class' organization with a tremendous amount of talent on the roster. I believe it will be a great year in all aspects...for the players, the city and the fans. Professionally, it is a great opportunity for me," replied Sherwood.

“I am very excited about Coach Sherwood’s work ethic and her knowledge of two of the most critical positions on the diamond. I’m looking forward to working with her in pursuit of another championship,” noted Arrietta.

Sherwood welcomes a roster that includes Virginia Tech’s former ace and 2008 All-NPF selection, Angela Tincher, catchers Kristen Butler (2008 NPF Defensive Player of the Year) and Olympic Gold Medalist Jenny Topping. The Racers roster will also feature two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Crystl Bustos, pitcher Jamie Juarez and infielder Kate Robinson. Tennessee’s Kenora Posey recently signed a free agent contract to suit up for the Racers in 2009.

The Racers look to add both superior talent and depth in the upcoming 2009 Draft scheduled for February 17th. The Racers hold the second pick overall in the first round of the draft.
