Bandits Utilize Big Inning to Defeat Racers

AKRON, Ohio - The Chicago Bandits rallied from their slow offensive start against the Akron Racers to pour four runs in the top of the fifth inning (17-11) to win the game, 5-1.  Chicago (21-6) managed the big inning with five infield singles, two Racer errors and only a sacrifice fly leaving the infield.

With the game tied 1-1, Jamie Schloredt started things for the Bandits with a one out single to the short stop.  Aileen Morales came in to pinch run for Schloredt and wasted little time stealing second base.  Caitlin Lever then singled to third baseman Jackie Pasquerella, advancing Morales to third.    After Lever's single, Akron turned to the bullpen and pitcher Jamee Juarez to try and work out of the jam.

Chicago's lead off hitter, Stacy May, had other plans though, as she laid down a bunt that snaked it's way through to second baseman Kenora Posey.  By the time Posey fielded the ball, everyone was safe and Chicago had a 2-1 lead.  After May stole second, Amber Patton hit a bouncer to Pasquerella who looked both runners back and Patton reached safely before the Racer third baseman could make an out.  With the bases loaded, Rachel Folden hit the only ball to leave the infield when she hit a fly ball to left field.  The ball allowed Lever to score and both May and Patton to advance to second and third.  Tammy Williams concluded the action when she hit a ground ball to first baseman Sam Ricketts.  Ricketts fielded the ball, but tossed it behind Posey who was covering first on the play which allowed May and Patton to score.

The Akron Racers actually scored first in the game, but couldn't maintain the lead tonight.  Jessica Toocheck blasted a one out double to right field and advanced to third when Chicago's right fielder, Patton, missed the cut off and the ball rolled across the infield.  Posey then drove Toocheck in on a ground out to shortstop.

Brittany Weil (2-3) picked up the loss for Akron as she surrendered three runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk in 4.1 innings.  Weil also managed to strike out three Bandits.  Pitching in relief for Akron, Juarez allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out a pair of Chicago hitters.

For Chicago, Eileen Canney (8-1) picked up the win in relief.  The Bandit pitcher allowed only one hit and one walk in four innings while striking out five.  Bandit starter, Brandice Balschmiter allowed an unearned run on two hits in the first three innings of the game.

The Racers look to get back on track in front of their hometown crowd Saturday night as Akron hosts Chicago for the fourth time in this five game series.  The first 500 people in attendance at the 7:05 PM game receive a replica model of Firestone Stadium.  For ticket information contact the Racers ticket office at (330) 376-8188 or online at www.akronracers.org.
