AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Racers professional softball team will gear up for its season opener by playing a doubleheader on Sunday, June 6 against the Northeast Ohio All-Stars slated to start at 4:30 p.m. EST at Firestone Stadium. Gates will open one hour prior to first pitch (3:30 p.m. EST) and $5 tickets will be available for purchase.
With two-time Olympic gold medalist Crystl Bustos at the helm, the Racers return veteran infielders Jackie Pasquerella and Samantha Ricketts as well as outfielder Lisa Modglin. Pitchers Lisa Norris and Brittany Weil return to guide the pitching corps which welcomes two-time ESPY Award winner and University of Arizona hurler Taryne Mowatt to the staff.
The Northeast Ohio All-Star team is comprised of current and former Division I softball players from the area, featuring players from the Akron, Kent State and Ohio State softball programs. Former Racer and Akron standout Tracee McCoy, Akron alumnae Julie Boyd and Lisa McClean as well as Ohio State alum Courtney Pruner will be among those competing Sunday.
The double-dipper will serve as a pre-season tune-up for the Racers who open the 2010 National Professional Fastpitch season in Tennessee against the Diamonds, June 9-13. Akron travels to Chicago for a three-game set June 20-22 before returning to the Rubber City, June 24-27 to host Chicago in the team’s home opening series.
