Former Spruce Creek ace Kelsi Dunne to pitch Thursday in Daytona Beach

|By Stephen Ruiz, Orlando Sentinel

For someone whose bedroom was destroyed by Hurricane Frances in 2004 and who survived the horrific tornadoes in Alabama in April, Kelsi Dunne is fortunate.

She realizes it, too.

Dunne, the former Port Orange Spruce Creek and Alabama pitcher, is scheduled to start Game 1 of a doubleheader at 7 Thursday night for the NPF Diamonds of the National Pro Fastpitch league at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for children 12 and younger.

While zeroing in on the strike zone, though, she won't lose sight of larger goals.

For instance:

Dunne, on what she would do if she didn't play softball: "I would probably have my own nonprofit organization for underprivileged kids to help them have the opportunity to get an education and play sports more.''
