Racers Win Behind Marder And Nohara’s Bats

Marder’s home run helps Racers split four-game series with Bandits

AKRON, OH- Racers catcher Sam Marder was never worried about her team’s first two losses to the Chicago Bandits.

After getting their bats silenced by Monica Abbott on Friday and Saturday night, Marder and her Racer (7-5) teammates dug in and exploded for 10 runs on their way to a 10-3 victory over the Chicago Bandits (7-5) in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Firestone Stadium.

The win puts the Racers back into a tie for first place in the NPF with Chicago as the team will prepare for the USSSA Pride next weekend. Marder’s 3-for-4 afternoon was highlighted by a solo home run in the third inning that broke the game open at 7-1.

After falling behind 1-0 for the second straight game, the Racers jumped back re-gained the lead, 2-1 when Nicole Trimboli singled to left, bringing home Lisa Modglin and Sharonda McDonald. Nicole Pauly’s sacrifice fly that scored Trimboli from third made it 3-1, ending the opening frame after Kelley Montalvo was thrown out at third trying to tag up from second base.

Marder’s leadoff single in the second inning was capitalized following a first-pitch, two-run home run to left center to widen the margin at 5-1.  The Racers added another run after a Montalvo walk with the bases loaded later in the inning which plated Lisa Modglin. The Racers put an exclamation point on the offensive party in the third. After Lisa Modglin laid down a bunt single,  and Sharonda McDonald singled to left center, Hoku Nohara, still searching for her first hit in 10 at-bats, blasted a three-run homer  over the left center field fence to put her team into double digits at 10-1.

In the first nine games, the Racers could only muster 21 runs. With both games of the doubleheader taken into account, the Racers scored 14 runs in the first 10 innings of action on Sunday alone.

Marder, the Racers catcher, knows the team would eventually get it together against the team they are chasing for NPF supremacy.

“We’re a very confident team,” Marder said. “I love playing for this team- we have great coaches and a great staff that’s going to keep us in the game.”
