AKRON, OH – June 28, 2013
– Even torrential rains, thunder, and lightning can’t stop the girls of summer from taking the field. After a 90-minute rain delay, the Akron Racers and Chicago took the field at Firestone Stadium determined to brave the elements. They survived three complete innings a hard rain falling caused the game’s postponement with the Racers leading 6-4.
Until that point, the game had been quite the offensive race around the bases. The Racers got on the board first when Brianna Turang led off with another one of her trademark infield singes. One out later, Charlotte Morgan slammed the first pitch from Bandits southpaw Nikki Nemitz to the outfield fence for a double, easily scoring Turang.
But the Bandits matched the Racers’ run in the top of the second inning, thanks to a leadoff single followed by two walks that led to an RBI groundout by Maggie Hull. Danielle Zymkowitz singled to score another run. The inning ended in web gem fashion when the ball got passed Racers catcher Jessica Garcia and Amber Patton bolted for home from third base. Garcia threw the ball from the backstop to first baseman Charlotte Morgan, who tagged out Patton at home for the final out of the inning. Riding the momentum of the inning-ending play, the Racers regained the lead in the bottom of the second thanks to Tess Sito’s first career home run, a three-run drive over the center field fence that scored Aja Paculba and Jessica Garcia.
The Bandits continued the back-and-forth battle the next inning, scoring two more runs to tie the game at four apiece against Racers’ starter Erin Arevalo. Rookie Rachele Fico replaced Arevalo and sent the Bandits down scoreless for the remainder of the inning. As the rain began to fall even harder, the Racers’ momentum mounted as well. They scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, first by a leadoff home run by Taylor Schlopy. Schlopy’s homer chased out Nemitz. Her replacement, rookie Mel Dumezich, surrendered the Racers’ sixth run of the game on an RBI single by Garcia.
The game is tentatively scheduled to resume in August, when the Bandits return to Akron for another series from the 8-11. The Racers and the Bandits are scheduled to close out this series with a day/night doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. EST. Both games will be the first National Pro Fastpitch games televised live on ESPN2.
-Tess Sito hit her first professional home run in the bottom of the second inning, launching a three-run shot over the center field fence.
-The game had to be postponed due to rain after the third inning. It is tentatively scheduled to be completed on Thursday, August 8.
