Chicago Bandits Hang On to Beat the Akron Racers 6 -5

By:

AKRON, OH – June 29, 2013 –  Eight-year veteran Vicky Galindo displayed her power Saturday afternoon, leading all hitters in a game filled with offensive counter attacks.

The Chicago Bandits second baseman hit a pair of home runs and accounted for half of the team’s runs, powering the Bandits to a 6-5 win over the Akron Racers.

Things looked promising early on Racers’ starter Ivy Renfroe, as she collected three strikeouts and allowed just one hit through the first two innings. However, the Bandits’ veterans put their power on display, blasting back-to-back home runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth.

Galindo put Chicago on the board first with a solo shot over the left field fence. Megan Wiggins, the league leader in batting average, home runs and RBI, refused to be out done and added a solo home run of her own.

The Racers responded for Renfroe quickly, using a two-out rally to post four runs in the bottom of the third. Brianna Turang provided the spark Akron needed with a chop single over Amber Patton’s head at third base. The speedy outfielder then found her way around the bases when a throwing error placed her at third and a wild pitch by Bandits’ starter Andi Williamson allowed her to touch home. Back-to-back walks then two-straight singles by Sam Marder and Brianna Hesson plated three more runs for Akron, giving the team a 4-2 advantage.

Chicago had an answer for the Racers, though, responding with four runs in the next half inning. Two of the runs came off the bat of Galindo, when she sent out her second long ball of the day. The rally forced the Racers to go to the bullpen, bringing in Brittany Mack, who finished out the game for Akron.

Turang came through again for the Racers in the fifth, displaying her quick footwork as she beat the throw of Bandits’ shortshop Tammy Williams. Williamson then walked Schlopy, forcing her out of the game and bringing in Mel Dumezich. The rookie from Texas A&M would exit quickly, though, as Charlotte Morgan’s long single loaded the bases. The Bandits then brought in ace Monica Abbott for a save opportunity.  The decorated veteran shut down the Racers’ offense, striking out six though three innings of work.

The Racers recorded a pair of singles against Abbott in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to capitalize, leaving the winning run at first base.

Akron will try to snap the Bandits’ four-game win streak Saturday during the nightcap of the ESPN2 televised doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Firestone Stadium.

Notes:
- Andi Williamson improved to 3-0 on the season., while Ivy Renfroe dropped to 1-2.
