NPFers split Saturday doubleheader in Akron

AKRON, OHIO – The National Pro Fastpitch All-Stars earned a split over two different all-star teams at Firestone Stadium on Saturday with pitcher Tarrah Beyster (Oregon State) leading the way in game one with a one-hit shutout.

With the split, the National Pro Fastpitch All-Stars will travel and spend five days in the Boston-area July 27-31 as the powerful lineup of top female fastpitch players will participate in clinics, games, a Fastpitch Expo and an appearance at the Boston Red Sox game with the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on Sun. July 27.

The Boston-area stop on the 2003 NPF All-Stars is a part of a nation-wide tour visiting 17 cities this summer. The tour will partner with Major League Baseball Clubs in 12 of those cities. Official league play is scheduled to begin early summer, 2004

While the All-Star pitchers were tossing great games, it was the offense that led the way. The team’s offense scored 13 runs in game one, their second highest total of the season, and put 17 hits on the scoreboard. Infielder Lisa Iancin (Cal-Berkley) paced the All-Stars’ attack Saturday by collecting four hits, a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.

All-Star pitcher Beyster led the way in game one, improving her season record to 5-1 with the shutout and lowered her team best ERA to 0.56. On the year Beyster has pitched 37.1 innings allowing only three earned runs.

Iancin and Venus Taylor (Western Illinois) paced the NPF offensive attack in the first game with each collecting three hits and three RBIs. Iancin connected in the fourth inning with a two-run home run, her first of the season. Lauren Bauer (Arizona) also delivered a home run to deep right centerfield in the game, her second long ball of the season.

Six of the NPF hitters collected two or more hits in the ballgame, including Bauer, Erika Hanson (Arizona), Danielle Cox (Florida State) and Shauna Briggs (Texas Tech). Bauer also had three RBIs in the game, followed by Hanson who collected two.

In the second game, Amy Kyler (Cleveland State) was a tough luck loser, as she gave up only one run and four hits. The loss dropped Kyler’s season record to 8-3. The one-run loss marked the third time that Kyler has lost such a decision. In those games the NPF offense managed to score only one run.

Kyler surrendered her only run of the ballgame in the first inning on an RBI single by Stacy Roth (Ohio State). After the first inning Kyler settled into a groove, allowing only two hits over the final six innings, while striking out seven College Star hitters.

In addition to posting a 14-3 record in games in California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, Tennessee, Phoenix and Tucson this season, the NPF All-Stars have hosted clinics and made appearances at Major League Baseball games in San Francisco, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix, Chicago and Cincinnati.

National Pro Fastpitch is the only professional women's fastpitch softball league in the United States. Major League Baseball is the official development Partner of NPF. The league is headquartered in Denver, Colo., and has been in operation since 1997 under the names Women's Pro Fastpitch (WPF) and Women's Professional Softball League (WPSL).
