Bandits Win Game Three

By:
Lisle, Ill. - Despite and early attack by the Venezuelan National Team, the Comcast Chicago Bandits walked away with their third victory of the season this evening at the Sports Complex on the campus of Benedictine University. With a slight breeze in the air, the ladies of Lisle topped the international squad 4-1 and extended their series lead to 6-1.

Anne Steffan led the Bandit offensive attack after batting 1.000 on the night while adding a stolen base. Clark, the 2005 RBI team leader and Mackenzie Vandergeest tallied two RBI each while Chicago hurlers Gina Oaks and Missy Beseres held Venezuela to just three hits and combined for five strikeouts.

Venezuela jumped on the board first after a Bandit error allowed Jineth Pimentel to score in the top of the first inning.

The Bandits answered back in the bottom of third, scoring four runs on five hits. Anne Steffan began the rally after drawing a walk from Venezuela’s pitcher Mariela Espinoza. Vicky Galindo slapped a single to centerfield, moving Steffan to second but an outfield misplay allowed both Bandits to advance an additional base to put runners at second and third with Trena Peel walking to the plate. After batting .500 (3-for-6) through the first two games of the season, Peel was intentionally walked to load the bases for Jaime Clark.

Clark, who hit the club’s first homerun of the season last night (June 2), singled to left field, scoring Steffan and Galindo. After and sacrifice fly by Amanda Williams advanced Peel and Clark into scoring position which allowed Mackenzie Vandergeest to tally two RBI after a shot to left field and giving the Bandits the final two runs of the inning.

The third-inning rally would prove to be the table-turner of the game as each team remained scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Bandit defense maintained a three up-three down performance four out of the seven innings Venezuela batters were faced. Laura Harms led the way with four assists defensively while legging out a bunt for an infield single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Chicago club was graced with the presence of Chicago Sky women’s basketball team member Liz Shimek. Shimek, who threw out the first pitch of the game, started every game for Michigan State and is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,780 career points while topping the rebounding category with a mark of 1,130.

The Bandits enter the final game of the series with Venezuela with a 3-0 season record with the final contest beginning at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, June 4 at Benedictine University.
