Riptide Takes Game Three from China, 4-1

By:
LOWELL, Ma. -- During the Riverbank’s Beach Ball Give Away night, the New England Riptide faced Team China for the third of a four game series. Zhou Yin started in the circle for Team China as the Riptide started Danielle Henderson who is no stranger to international play.

Henderson sat down the first three batters she faced, while Yin had to get herself out of a jam which had the Riptide loading the bases but unable to score a run. Meanwhile, Team China struck first in the second with a lead off single by Wu Di. She was advanced by a sacrifice by Zhang Ai. She then scored on an RBI by Pan Xia who was thrown out at second trying to stretch her single into a double.

The Riptide bats remained silent until the fifth despite the entry of China star Qi Li when Lisa Iancin blasted a home run over the left field wall. Sutton began the hit fest as she singled. Kelley then grounded into a fielder’s choice and swapped places with Sutton at first. Shanel Scott then pinch ran for Kelley. She immediately stole second and did not even draw a throw. Gina Carbonatto reached first on an error advancing Scott to third. Carri Leto Martin then singled scoring Scott and advancing Carbonatto to third. With runners at first and third, Martin stole second. Power hitter Lyndsey Angus kept the inning alive by smashing a double to left field, but unfortunately was thrown out at third by a beautiful relay by Team China ending the inning. The four runs that inning were more than enough to hold off Team China for the victory.

Henderson shut down Team China the rest of the way, but the Riptide posed a small threat in the sixth. Tarrah Beyster singled and Alex Sutton was hit by a pitch but both she and pinch runner (for Beyster) Pasquerella were both stranded on base.

The Riptide now lead the series two games to one and the teams play the final game of the series Sunday at 1:05 at Martin Softball Field. The game is a scheduled make up game from Thursday’s rainout.
