Burnum Leads Force with Bat and Glove

By:
Allentown, Pa. - The Philadelphia Force completed a day/night doubleheader sweep of Michigan Ice by taking the nightcap by a score of 5-4. Third baseman Clare Burnum was 3-for-3 and recorded six infield assists in the game. The Force had won the day game by a score of 7-1. The record for the Force improves to 22-17 with just five games remaining in the 2007 regular season.

Right fielder Trena Peel (2-for-3) got the Force started in the second inning. With one out, she slammed an Ashley Hamby pitch deep into the Allentown night to the delight of the 201 fans in attendance. It was Peel’s fifth home run of the season and the Force were up 1-0.

The Ice would answer back in their next at-bat. Back-to-back one-singles by Elana Meyers and Becky Mason put runners on first and second. After Mason was retired at second base on a Charity Butler fielder’s choice, Amanda Jenkins drove in her first of four runs on the night with an RBI single to center field. Force starter Stacy Birk (3-6) would pitch out of that jam to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the third, the Force would strike for two runs. Consecutive singles by left fielder Jaime Dacey and center fielder Sharonda McDonald, who was 2-for4, started the rally. An infield groundout by Emily Friedman moved both runners up one base. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer drove in Dacey with a sacrifice fly to center that also moved McDonald to third. McDonald would then score on a single by Kellie Wilkerson to give the Force a 3-1 lead after three innings.

Burnum started the fourth inning on a positive note for the Force by singling. With one-out, she moved all the way to third on a passed ball. One out later, Dacey walked to place runners on first and third. With McDonald at the plate, a wild pitch scored Burnum and moved Dacey to third. After McDonald made the second out of the inning, Friedman knocked in Dacey with a single to make the score 5-1.

The Ice made things very interesting in the fifth. Jenkins blasted a three-run home run off of Birk to cut the lead to just one for the Force.

At that point, Jodie Cox was summoned from the bullpen. Cox ended up tossing the last 2 2/3 innings for the save. She did not allow a base hit or a run in her time in the circle and recorded three strikeouts, none bigger than the strikeout of Jenkins with the bases loaded for the Ice in the six inning.

The Force and Ice finish their four game series Friday night at 7:05.
