Stockton, Calif. – The California Sunbirds lost the second game of their three-game home stand against the visiting Texas Thunder, 4-0, on Wednesday, July 28. The loss drops the Birds to 12-30 on the season, while the Thunder improve to 26-11.

For the second consecutive night, the Texas Thunder put up two runs early, enabling them to hold on for the 2-0 victory. And for the second night in a row the Birds got a strong outing from their starting pitcher, Kirsten Voak, but were unable to provide any run support towards her cause. California threatened once in the game, putting runners on the corners with two outs in the fourth, but they were unable to capitalize.

The first two runs scored by the Thunder were courtesy of Ginger Jones-Powers in the seven hole as she dented the plate in the second inning, coming in to score on a single by Erin Evans. With her next at bat, in the fourth inning, she did all the work herself as she floated a leadoff homerun over the rightfield wall, her second homerun of the season. Jones-Powers finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI. In the seventh, Ryan Realmuto, added two insurance runs as she drove a 2-1 pitch over the leftfield fence, also her second long ball of the season.

Both pitchers went the distance for the second time this series as Voak picked up the loss for the Sunbirds as she gave up four runs on eleven hits while striking out four. Lindsay Chouinard earned the win for the Thunder as she shutout the Birds, while giving up two hits in her seven innings of work.

The Sunbirds complete their three-game home stand against the Thunder tomorrow, Thursday, July 29. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 pm PDT.
