ROSEMONT, Ill. (November 21, 2017) – The Chicago Bandits have agreed to a one-year contract with veteran free agent catcher Kristyn Sandberg, team officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
Sandberg, in her sixth season as a professional, appeared in 45 games for the Texas Charge during the 2017 campaign. The Island Park, New York native ranked fourth on the club with six home runs and tallied 17 RBI along with a .241 clip at the plate. Behind the plate, she nabbed 17 percent of baserunners and posted an impressive .982 fielding percentage.
“We are excited to add a player of Kristyn’s caliber to our roster,” Bandits general Toni Calmeyn said. “She’s been around the game in numerous locations and knows what it takes to perform in this league on a consistent basis.”
After beginning her career with the USSSA Pride, Sandberg spent three seasons in Florida before a blockbuster trade sent her to the now-defunct Pennsylvania Rebellion ahead of the 2015 season.
During her time with the Pride, she proved herself to be one of the league’s most reliable weapons at the plate, garnering Rookie of the Year honors in 2012 after batting a career-high .367 with seven home runs and 33 RBI. USSSA captured a pair of Cowles Cup championships with Sandberg as a the team’s primary catcher in 2013 and 2014.
Sandberg played a pair of seasons in Pennsylvania before signing with the Texas Charge as a free agent prior to the 2017 season.
A Second-Team All-American selection at the University of Georgia as a player, Sandberg returned to the collegiate level as a graduate manager at Louisiana State University for three years before joining the softball staff at Syracuse University in 2015 as an assistant coach. The upcoming season will mark Sandberg’s third with the Orange.
