UMKC Roos drop tight 2-0 game vs TEAM NPF

Kansas City, Kan. – The UMKC softball team continued its fall season on Thursday night at Community America Ballpark, dropping a 2-0 decision to the NPF All-Stars.  ‘Roo pitchers led the squad in the game as Deanna Friese, Megan Smith and Katie Franks combined four seven innings pitched, allowing five hits, while striking out four.

In the game, Team NPF got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when shortstop Andrea Duran singled, stole second and came around to score on left fielder Francesca Enea’s bloop single that landed between a trio a ‘Roos.

UMKC responded in the bottom half of the inning when Kaelene Curry led-off the game with a bunt single.  Two batters later, right fielder Emily Ott hit a sharp grounder in the hole to Duran putting runners on first and second for the ‘Roos.  UMKC could not capitalize though, as former Olympic Gold Medalist Cat Osterman struck out Megan Ussary to end the threat.

After the first, the pitchers took control of the game, as only one batter reached base for either team in the next two innings.

Team NPF would then extend its lead in the fifth, scoring its final run when Rachael Mitchell singled to right field scoring Enea from second.

The ‘Roos would attempt to mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth when Brook Whiteside led-off the inning with a single.  The NPF All-Stars though would not allow the UMKC rally, as Sarah Pauly struck out five of the final six UMKC hitters to close out the game.

In the game, Curry, Ott and Whiteside each recorded a hit for the ‘Roos, while Enea finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run and a walk.  On the mound, Osterman picked up the win for Team NPF, allowing two hits with 12 strikeouts, while Pauly notched the save, throwing three inning, allowing one hit with eight strike outs.  For UMKC, Friese took the loss, pitching four innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again this weekend for the Second Annual ‘Roo Alumni Weekend.
