Walk-off Grand Slam Lifts Racers to 6-3 Win Over Rebellion

Akron, OH – June 13, 2014
- With Rachele Fico in the circle, the Racers looked to extend their winning streak to three games. The Racers ace stepped into the circle after finding out only 30 minutes prior to game time that she would be starting the game, after Lisa Norris was scratched from the lineup.

“I warmed up fast,” Fico said. “I came in with the mind-set that I was starting tomorrow, so I had to warm up fast, but I knew that my team would have my back.”

The Racers hitters did just that, exchanging leads three times before Nerissa Myers hit a walk-off grand slam to bring home the win.

The Rebellion
would strike first, after a third inning walk to Lauren Lappin and an error by second baseman Ashley Thomas that allowed Bianca Mejia to reach first. Courtney Liddle then doubled to drive in Lappin.

In the fourth, a single from Jenn Salling and another from Briana Hamilton, in which they both advanced and a walk to pinch hitter Andie Varsho would load the bases with just one out. Fico proved why the Racers have been able to rely on her in the circle, when she struck out Lappin and got Ogle to ground out to Kelley Montalvo at third to get out of the jam.

Dallas Escobedo, who was the number one pick in this year’s NPF draft, threw three innings of shutout softball before the Racers bats woke up in the fourth. After Haley Outon was hit by a pitch, Olivia Watkins entered the game to pinch run and stole second. A Kelley Montalvo walk set Ayumi Karino up for her first RBI of the 2014 season when she singled to left and drove in Watkins. An error on the play by Rebellion left fielder Angeline Quiocho allowed Montalvo to score, to put the Racers up 2-1.

The Rebellion would respond with two of their own, when Taylor Edwards and Jenn Salling singled. Lauren Lappin then notched her own single to drive in Edwards and Salling.

Heading in to the bottom of the 7th, the Racers were down 3-2. Second baseman Lauren Lappin committed an error that allowed Ashley Thomas to reach first. Ayumi Karino then reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Thomas thrown out at second. Jill Barrett reached base on a bunt single, then Escobedo missed the zone and hit Taylor Schlopy to load the bases, and bring Nerissa Myers to the plate.

“I was just looking for a base hit,” said Myers, who hit two home runs in last night’s game. “I was just looking to go gap to gap, and if it lifted and got out, then great.”

The grand slam lifted the Racers to a 6-3 win and their third in a row. Myers is now averaging .519 on the season, with 4 home runs and 13 RBIs.

The Racers return to Firestone Stadium tomorrow night at 7:05 for the third game in their series against the Rebellion. For more information about the Akron Racers visit www.akronracers.org or call (330) 376-8188. All action can also be heard live on The Rebellion Radio through MSA Sports Network.
