Glory avoid sweep; win finale over Chicago 7-4

ELGIN, IL.-The Washington Glory took the fourth and final game of the series to prevent being swept by the Chicago Bandits, blasting three home runs and pulling off a 7-4 win despite having four fewer hits Chicago at the Judson Sports Complex Sunday afternoon in National Pro Fastpitch action.

"Coming into the series, if you would have told me we would take three of four I would be pleased," Chicago's third baseman Stacy May said. "But when you take the first three you want to win the last one, so it's a little disappointing."

With the game tied at 2-all, Catalina Morris started the fifth inning with a walk and Nicole Barber scored Morris with a triple to right field. This prompted Bandits head coach to take out starter Jessica Sallinger and Kristina Thorson came on in relief. Barber scored on the next at bat. Rachel Folden tried to pick her off but threw off target and Barber easily made it to home.

Sallinger (6-4) pitched four innings, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks. She struck out two.

The Glory added two more runs in the sixth inning. After Thorson walked Callista Balko, Sara Larquier hit a two run homer to right center. The Bandits began a comeback in their half of the inning. Jamie Clark led off the inning with a walk and Samantha Findlay-pinch hitting for Nicole Trimboli-hit a grounder to the third baseman that Laraquier couldn't handle and resulted in an error. Kristie Fox singled to right field to score Clark.

Sarah Pauly came in to relieve starter Desiree Serrano (9-2) in the sixth who gave up seven hits, four runs, two walks and struck out three.

Laura Harms hit a grounder to Oli Keohohou and the first baseman threw home to pick off Trimboli. Aileen Morales and Stacy May each hit infield singles that scored Fox and loaded the bases, closing the game to 6-4. But Freed struck out to end the inning.

Keohohou gave Washington a cushion with her second home run of the game, a solo shot, extending the Glory's lead to 7-4 in the seventh.

In the Bandits' last attempt, Emily Nichols popped out to the second baseman for the first out, Clark grounded out to the shortstop and Trimboli was Chicago's final out, grounding to second.

May gave the Bandits a very early 1-0 advantage with lead off homer in the first inning, two innings later Keohohou answered with a two-run smash of her own giving Washington a 2-1 lead.

"I was happy to be able to give us a spark," May said. "It's always important to get an early lead."

In the third inning May tied the game at 2-all. May got on base with a single and promptly stole second base. The pick off attempt from the Glory's pitcher Callie Piper was off target and May went to third base with one out. Amanda Freed came up to bat and hit a fast moving grounder to first base and May took off from third and just got under Piper's mitt.

"We gave up a lot of home runs, we had more hits but they hit the home runs," May said. "That made the difference."
