Racer Quiet Thunder Comeback, Win in Seventh

RACERS QUIET THUNDER COMEBACK, WIN IN SEVENTH

AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Racers and Rockford Thunder were locked in a
back and forth battle all of Wednesday night.  It was a battle that
took all the way to the final batter of the game for the Racers to win
4-3.

With the Racers (18-16) and Rockford tied at three in the bottom of
the seventh, it became evident that second baseman Veronica Wootson
did not want to play extra innings. Wootson came up with one out and
the entire game on her shoulders. After fouling off a couple pitches,
Wootson ripped a Cassidy Scoggins pitch over the left field fence for
a walk-off homerun.

Wootson’s fifth home run of the year gave the Racers their second win
in a row to start their last home stand of the season.

The Racers started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when
India Chiles reached on a bunt single and then went to second on a
base running error. She then crossed the plate when designated player
Shannon Doepking doubled to centerfield to make the score 1-0.

The Thunder came back to take the lead on a pair of unearned runs in
the top of the third inning.  Rockford leadoff hitter Erin Evans
started the inning with a one out double to leftfield.  Amanda
Williams followed by reaching on an error by first baseman Kate
Robinson.  Lindsay Gardner followed two batters later with a two run
single.

Akron didn’t strike again until the bottom of the fifth when third
baseman Norrelle Dickson got in on the action by hitting one of her
two triples on the night to deliver Wootson to the dish.  Dickson’s
two triples ties her for the league lead with two triples.  Dickson
scored later in the inning on a single by Kristen Butler.

The Thunder (14-20) looked as though they were going to head home with
the loss with two outs in the top of the seventh, but with the bases
loaded, they were able to comeback again when Audrey Rendon scored on
Kristen Zaleski’s single.  Amanda Williams was thrown out at home on a
perfect play by centerfielder Kim Hamilton and catcher Butler to
prevent the leading run from scoring.  The run tied the game 3-3,
setting the stage for Wootson’s heroics.

University of Houston product Angel Shamblin started the game for the
Racers (18-16) and went six plus innings before being pulled in the
seventh inning in favor of Angela Tincher (12-5). Despite Shamblin’s
efforts in holding the Thunder to just three runs, one earned, she
received a no decision.

Settlemier started for the Thunder and allowed the first three runs
before being pulled. She was able to hold the Racers’ offense to
minimum action for most of the contest.  Cassidy Scoggins (3-6) picked
up the loss for the Thunder thanks to Wootson’s longball.

The Akron Racers will be home against the Thunder once again on
Thursday at 7:05 pm in a FSN Game of the Week. The Racers have just
six home games left on the season and are currently in the final
position to make the National Pro Fastpitch playoffs.
