Akron beats Rockford in 7th Inning

RACERS CRUISE PAST THUNDER WITH SEVENTH INNING RALLY

AKRON, OHIO – The Racers were down to their final out and trailing the
Rockford Thunder 3-1 on Friday night.  Three batters later the Racers
(19-17) won the game 4-3 on a walk off single by Kristen Butler.

With Angelena Mexicano on first base, Veronica Wootson and Norrelle
Dickson got base hits to left field and shortstop respectively to load
the bases.  The scene was set for Butler, the league’s second place
hitter in RBI’s.  Butler delivered the big knock Akron needed to stay
in and win the game, driving the ball to left field.  Mexicano and
Wootson scored easily on the base hit to tie the game.  Then when
Rockford leftfielder, Amanda Williams allowed the ball to escape from
her grasp Dickson scored the winning run.  Butler was credited with
two RBI’s on the play to give her 29 on the year.

In the bottom of the second inning, Akron started the scoring, Kate
Robinson led off with her eighth home run of the season, which gave
Akron a 1-0 lead.

After Racer starter Angel Shamblin had a perfect first trip through
the lineup, Rockford leadoff batter Erin Evans started the fourth
inning with a single.  Two hitters later, Tonya Callahan slammed a 2-0
pitch over the left field wall for her seventh home run of the season
to make the score 2-1 Rockford.

The Thunder (15-21) struck again in the sixth, as Lindsay Gardner
scored on a Kristen Zaleski double to leftfield to make the score 3-1,
but that proved not to be enough as the Racers escaped with a victory,
their third of the four-game series.

Callahan led the Thunder on offense, going 1 for 2 with a homerun (7),
2 RBI (18), and a hit by pitch. Kristen Zaleski was 1 for 3 with a
double and an RBI (7). Stephanie Fischer, Evans and Gardner all had
singles for Rockford.

The Racers were led by Kate Robinson who had a home run (8) and an RBI
(20). Kristen Butler had the game winning single and two RBI (29).
Veronica Wootson and Norrelle Dickson each had two singles, while
Jessica Toocheck and Kim Hamillton both singled for Akron.

Angel Shamblin (4-5) was given the victory for her effort. Shamblin
went the distance, allowing three earned runs and five hits, while
striking out one.

Serena Settlemier (2-8) received the loss for Rockford. Settlemier
allowed four runs, three of which were earned on seven hits, while
striking out five. Settlemier lasted 6.2 innings for the Thunder.
Allison Kime received a blown save after allowing the game-winning hit
to Butler, the only batter she faced.

The Racers will now host the third place Chicago Bandits to close out
the home schedule at Firestone Stadium. The Racers now only trail
Chicago by one game.  Games will be played Saturday through Tuesday at
7:05. Tickets to all home games can be purchased by calling the
Racers’ ticket office at 330-376-8188 or by visiting akronracers.org.
