RACERS CONCLUDE SUSPENDED GAME WITH DRAMATIC WIN OVER HEATUnable to Hold off Heat in Game Two

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Racers picked up where they left off Sunday evening with a thrilling eight-inning victory over the Arizona Heat on Tuesday night at Firestone Stadium. Left fielder Antionette Armstrong scored the game-winning run on a Lindsay Wood sacrifice bunt to give Akron the 4-3 edge.

With the score knotted at 3-3 on Sunday, the Racers and Heat were forced to halt play after six and two-thirds innings due to lightning. On Tuesday night, during the conclusion of the suspended game, Akron responded in the bottom of the eighth when Armstrong worked a one-out walk. Armstrong moved to second on shortstop Kristin Johnson’s bunt single and took third on an errant throw. With a chance to win the game, Wood put down a sacrifice bunt to score Armstrong who slid just under the tag of Arizona's catcher Leah Braatz.

Custom Sports Imprints Player of the Game, Brandee McArthur, started in the pitcher’s circle for the Racers on both Sunday and Tuesday nights, picking up her third win of the season. McArthur allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out a pair. McArthur also helped her own cause, hitting two singles.

Radara McHugh worked 4.1 innings of relief on Sunday night, striking out three while scattering three hits and allowing no runs.

Arizona picked up all three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead, but the Racers battled back in the fifth to tie the game. With one out in the frame, second baseman Brandi Stuart singled and advanced to second on a throw that cut down Danielle Fincham at third. Stuart then stole her team-leading sixth base of the season with a swipe of third. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, right fielder Trena Peel singled to score Stuart. Tuesday night’s win in the eighth inning marked the Racers fifth victory in a row at home.

In Tuesday’s regularly scheduled matchup, the Racers were unable to hold off the Heat as they fell 6-0.

Centerfielder Iyhia McMichael’s two-out single in the bottom of the first was the only hit the Racers were able to take off of Arizona’s Erica Beach. Beach struck out six while allowing only the one hit and no runs.

The Racers looked to pose a threat in their half of the third when right fielder Trena Peel took advantage of an Arizona error by moving all the way to third on a dropped fly ball in right field. Peel was one of three Racers left on base.

Nikki Myers started in the pitcher’s circle for Akron, scattering three hits for one earned run in 3.2 innings while striking out six. Myers record now stands at 2-2. 2000 Olympic Gold Medallist, Danielle Henderson, relieved her with two outs in the fourth.

The Racers are in action tomorrow, June 16 as they head to Montclair, New Jersey to face the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut in a three game series. The Racers will return home to take on the first-place Texas Thunder on Sunday at 7:05 p.m.
