Robinson, Racers Power Past Pride

Robinson, Racers Power Past Pride
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Racers continued to roll along as they greeted the USSSA Pride at Firestone Stadium Friday night by defeating the Pride 10-1.  The Racers were powered offensively by Kate Robinson who went 1-3 with her one hit being a three run home run.  Robinson added a total of five RBIs to her evening with a sacrifice fly and an RBI ground out in addition to the homer.
Along with a strong offensive showcase, the Racers got a dominating performance in the circle by Brittany Weil.  The Racers' rookie pitched six shutout innings, allowing only five hits while striking out six Pride hitters.  Weil never allowed more than one Pride base runner at one time and didn't allow a runner to reach second base until Kristin Schnacke doubled to right-center field to lead off the top of the sixth inning.
The Racers got the offense going right away in the bottom of the first inning.  Lisa Modglin led off with a single to left field, when left fielder Amber Jackson bobbled the ball Modglin raced to second.  One batter later, Sari-Jane Jenkins lined a triple to right-center field to give Akron a 1-0 lead.  Pride starter Kia Fennell then walked three of the next four batters to force Jenkins home.  One batter later Robinson drove a fly ball to center field to bring home Jessica Toocheck and give Akron a 3-0 lead.
Akron kept the runs streaming in as they scored three runs in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings.  Robinson hit a home run that plated Jackie Pasquerella and Jenny Topping in the third to make it a 6-0 Racer advantage.  The Racers brought nine hitters to the plate in the fourth en route to three more runs, starting with Jenkins earning a walk.  Pasquerella then laid down a bunt in front of home plate, Pride's pitcher Fennell threw the ball away, in an attempt to retire Pasquerella, allowing Jenkins to get to third base.  With runners on the corners and one out, Topping laced a single to left field to drive in Jenkins.  Two batters later Robinson picked up her final RBI with a ground ball to shortstop that brought home Pasquerella.  The inning wrapped up when Kenora Posey picked up her third consecutive hit, a ground ball driven into center field that scored Topping.
Akron picked up their final run of the game in the fifth inning on a double by Topping that brought home Toocheck.  At this point, the Racers had the game well in hand with a 10-0 lead on the Pride.
The Pride picked up one run in the top of the seventh inning after Jackson started the inning by reaching on a dropped third strike by Kristen Butler.  Breanne Javier then drove Jackson home with an infield single to third base.
Fennell (0-1) picked up the loss for the Racers in a complete game effort.  Fennell went six innings, allowing ten runs, nine earned, on 13 hits and six walks while striking out a pair.
The Racers and Pride will meet up once again at Firestone Stadium Saturday night at 7:35 PM with fireworks following the game.  For ticket information contact the Racers ticket office at 330-376-8188 or order your tickets online at
