AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Racers pulled out a thrilling come-from-behind victory in their last at bat to down the first-place Texas Thunder 4-3 on Tuesday night at Firestone Stadium. Shortstop Kristin Johnson was two-for-four with a run scored and two RBIs, including the game-winner.

The Texas Thunder scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning to gain an early lead, but the Racers responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs of their own.

Catcher Jenn Poore started the Racers rally by leading off the fourth inning with a single down the right field line. Danielle Fincham, on to pinch-run for Poore, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Trena Peel. Johnson recorded her first RBI when she sent a one-out single into center field to score Fincham. Johnson moved around the bases on two Texas errors and scored the tying run on center fielder Iyhia McMichael’s RBI single.

Texas regained a short-lived lead in the top of the sixth, but Akron came back to knot the score at three in the bottom of the inning. Heather Wright scored the Racers’ third run when she reached and advanced to second on an error by Thunder third baseman Clare Burnum. Standing at third after a groundout, Wright slid in safely on a wild pitch.

The Racers took the final lead of the game in the seventh when second baseman Brandi Stuart began the bottom of the frame with a single to right and took second on a passed ball. Stuart reached third as Poore laid down a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt. A Nicole Trimboli single and a walk to Peel loaded the bases. With the game on the line, Johnson delivered a high chopper to second base to easily score Stuart and give the Racers their tenth win of the season.

For her efforts, Johnson was awarded Custom Sports Imprints Player of the Game, while her game-winning RBI single was the Summa Health System Play of the Game.

Radara McHugh worked one and one-thirds innings in relief of starter Nikki Myers to improve to a flawless 2-0 on the season. McHugh allowed no runs and no hits while striking out one. Myers worked the first five and two-thirds, allowing three unearned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

The Racers and Thunder square off again tomorrow as they travel to Houston to begin a new three-game series. The Racers return to Akron on Sunday, June 27 at 1:05 p.m. to host the second-place New York/New Jersey Juggernaut at Firestone Stadium. For more information, call 330-376-8188 or log on to
