Chicago Bandits no-hitter ruined by Simon

Chicago Bandits no-hitter ruined by Simon, but Chicago holds on to steal the Battle of the Sexes
Written By - Grace Weitz

It was a battle of the balls at Road Ranger Stadium in Rockford, Ill. as the independent baseball Northern League Rockford Riverhawks went mitt for mitt with the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits.

The game, which followed National Pro Fastpitch rules, was dominated by the ladies in white and orange. Samantha Findlay, the Bandits' first baseman, put the Bandits on the board  in the top of the first, blasting a ball up the middle for a double. Her third double of the year sent Stacy May comfortably jogging towards home to score the first run of the Battle of the Sexes.

After a silent third inning the Bandits belted out another three runs in the top of the fourth to go up 5-0. The scoring onslaught started with a ball railed up the middle by second baseman, Emily Friedman, bringing home Angela Findlay.

The Rockford RiverHawks, outfitted in camouflage jerseys, attempted to storm back, but struggled to fire up the hits column. They didn't get on base until the bottom of the seventh when Randall Simon, a former major league player, magically appeared at the plate in basketball shorts. With two outs, to strike one above Bandits' second baseman Friedman's head for the RiverHawks first hit of the game.

But it was too late for the RiverHawks, who were dismantled by the Bandits 5-0.

The RiverHawks were shutout by the stellar pitching of the Bandit's , who almost combined for a no-hitter. Nikki Nemitz, Jessica Sallinger, and Kristina Thorson held the RiverHawks until two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Nikki Nemitz who started the night on the mound, ended three consecutive innings in strikeouts and threw a no-no for the three innings she pitched.

She was replaced by Jessica Sallinger, who threw four strikeouts in two innings, and Kristina Thorson, who threw five strikeouts in two innings.

The Rockford RiverHawks pitcher on the other hand struggled. Todd Andrews, who is a fastpitch pitcher and instructor at Triple Play Sports that the RiverHawks signed to a one-day contract, was pulled after giving up two runs and two hits in two innings.

The Bandits will head next to Salem, Va.  to take on the Virginia Renegades, a traveling softball program out of Roanoke, Va. They will then return to Elgin for their home opener against the Akron Racers on Sunday, June 20. Both teams are currently tied for first in the NPF with a 3-2 record.
