Akron Home Opener Thursday

AKRON, Ohio (June 23, 2010) – The second place Akron Racers (5-3) welcome the Chicago Bandits (4-4) to Firestone Stadium as they kick off the 2010 National Pro Fastpitch homestand tomorrow (Thursday) at 7:05 p.m. EST. The two will also square off Friday, June 25 through Sunday, June 27 with 7:05 p.m. start times scheduled until Sunday’s 2:05 p.m. matinee finale.

Akron recently earned the series win at Chicago, defeating the Bandits, 4-0 and 3-0, narrowly missing a series sweep but for a 4-3 eight-inning loss in Elgin last week.

Lisa Modglin returns to the Rubber City with a big stick, having drilled a pair of home runs against Chicago. The outfielder currently paces the squad with a .348 batting average, six RBI and three homers, which rank second in the NPF. Jess Valis and Jamee Juarez also enter the series with solid numbers, including respective .333 and .320 batting averages. On the mound, Lisa Norris (3-0) has quickly emerged as the team’s ace and leads the league with three wins and is third with 22 strikeouts while collectively, Akron pitchers boast a league-low 1.73 ERA.

Despite suffering a pair of losses against Akron, Chicago’s lineup includes a battery of offensive threats, most notably catcher Rachel Folden who leads her team and the league with four home runs and nine RBI. Infielder Emily Friedman holds the highest batting average in the league with .500 while rookie Angela Findley enters the weekend batting .320. The Bandits’ pitching staff enters with a 3.56 team ERA with veteran Kristina Thorson pacing the club with 1.54 ERA. Veteran Jessica Sallinger and rookie Nikki Nemitz each saw time in the circle during last week’s three-game series.
