MYERS THROWS FIRST RACERS NO HITTER IN 9-0 WIN OVER HEAT

By:
AKRON, Ohio – Nikki Myers threw the Akron Racers first no-hitter as members of National Pro Faspitch (NPF), as the Racers downed the Arizona Heat 9-0 at Firestone Stadium on Thursday night. Myers’ no-hitter is just the fifth to be thrown in the history of the NPF.

Myers struck out seven opposing batters, including Heat designated player Tarrah Beyster to end the game. Myers gave up only two walks, which accounted for the only Arizona base runners of the night, en route to her 11th victory of the season. Myers has won her last four decisions and is 3-0 in the past week with a 0.75 ERA while holding opponents to a .104 batting average. Myers has also homered in two of the team’s last three games. Myers was named the Custom Sports Imprints Player of the Game for her historic performance.

Myers received plenty of support from the Racers offense, which posted three three-run innings, including a three-run home run off the bat of third baseman Becky McMurtry in the fifth inning.

Second baseman Brandi Stuart knocked in the game’s first two runs in the bottom of the first with a ringing double to right-center field, scoring Myers and center fielder Iyhia McMichael. Stuart finished the game going two-for-four with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Racers added three more in the bottom of the third with help from McMichael’s two-run triple, which brought in left fielder Heather Wright and McMurtry. Right fielder Trena Peel also notched an RBI single in the frame to remain the NPF’s RBI leader with 25.

Akron punctuated its lead in the fifth when first baseman Nicole Trimboli drew a walk, and Peel singled to set the table for McMurtry. McMurtry lined the third pitch of the at-bat over the right field wall to put the Racers ahead 9-0. The homer was McMurtry’s first as a Racer and was named the Summa Health Care Systems Play of the Game.

The Racers take on the Heat in game two of the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Firestone Stadium. The two teams wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, August 14, with games scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader will be Akron Racers Fan Appreciation Day and will feature the drawing for the 2004 Racers Raffle.
