Where Are They Now? - Carla Brookbank

Before Kylie Reynolds...before Brittney Robinson...Carla Brookbank set the pitching standard for excellence at Kent State.

Carla Brookbank-Schaal was a featured pitcher and hitter for the Akron Racers from 1999-2000. The Green, Ohio native currently resides with her husband, Bob and her four boys Jack (6 ½), Nick (5), Mike (3 ½) and Luke (20 mos.) while serving as a full-time MOM, part-time nurse practitioner and part-time softball instructor through her company Brookbank Fastpitch.

Carla and Bob, who will celebrate their eighth wedding anniversary on July 13, 2010, were wed in 2002. In true spirit of the game, Carla flew home from the Canadian Cup the night before only to travel back to compete just two days after the wedding! The pair met in 1999 while working at St. Thomas Hopsital in Akron.

Carla joined the Women's Professional Softball League (WPSL) in 1997 and played with both the Durham Dragons & the Virginia Roadsters before coming to Akron. She was nominated for the WPSL's Most Valuable Player Award in 1997, was named an All Star in 1998 and 1999. She played for the Akron Racers in 1999 and 2000 and played for the California Sunbirds in 2004.
In 1988 and 1989, Carla led her Springfield high school team to two State Championships. She was All-League each year, and All-Summit County, All-District, and All-State her sophomore and junior seasons, including her selection as Beacon Journal Player of the Year in 1988. Carla was inducted into the Springfield High School Hall of Fame and was a Dapper Dan Award Recipient three times.

She continued her education and softball career at Kent State University where she received a slew of accolades and was named an All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) selection in 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1995. Carla was named the Golden Flashes' Most Valuable Player in 1992, 1994, and 1995. As a senior, she earned the distinction of both MAC Hitter and Pitcher of the Year and was also named to the NCAA All-Region Team. Before leaving Kent, Carla set numerous school records. A few include 70 wins, 459 strikeouts, 113 complete games, 26 shutouts, 877 innings pitched, and an ERA of 0.67. She graduated from Kent State University in 1995 with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing and in 2000 with a Master's Degree in Nursing.

As a member of both the Kent State University and Akron Amateur Hall of Fame, Carla was chosen by Team Smith Nationals to tour the country and compete in an International Softball Tournament which consisted of many of the Olympic Softball Teams in 2002. Highlights of the tournament include her one-hit shut out against the Canadian and Great Britain Olympic Teams, and a third place finish to the USA Olympic Team and the USA Olympic Team B.
