Spaulding and Kliesing Shine as the Diamonds Shut Out Bandits

Lexington, North Carolina- Diamonds break the losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Bandits Tuesday night, at North Davidson High School, in front of 1100 fans. Danielle Spaulding, a former University of North Carolina All-American, would go the distance, allowing only five Bandits hits, while throwing only 79 pitches.

The first strike by the Diamonds would happen the third, with a two-out run hit in by Angeline Quiocho. With one out, and Diamonds’ third baseman, Loryn Johnson, on first Rhiannon Kliesing, a rookie out of Texas A&M, would drive a 1-1 pitch to deep right field for a double, advancing Johnson to third. After a Megan Gibson fly out, Quiocho would hit a hard ground ball up the middle that Bandit shortstop, Tammy Williams, could not come up with, allowing Johnson to score. Diamonds’ right fielder Brianna Hesson would to fly out to center field to end the inning.

Neither team would get their offense going until the bottom of the fifth, when Kliesing would drive a 3-2 pitch well over the centerfield fence to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Diamonds.

The two runs would prove to be all they would need, as Spaulding and the Diamonds’ defense would sparkle over the last two innings, not allowing any Bandits to advance past first base.

Tammy Williams led the Bandits with a two for two night at the plate, while Gibson and Kliesing both went two for three on the night.

Diamonds’ catcher Brittany McKinney, out of West Forsyth High, who caught Spaulding at UNC, was stellar behind the plate, throwing out two Bandits’ runners attempting to steal second base.

The two teams will face off again in a doubleheader tomorrow, with the first game starting at 5:30 pm.
