Monica Abbott Throws Perfect Game, Blanks Racers 5-0

August 4, 2011

Site: Rosemont Stadium
Scores: Bandits 5, Racers 0
Records: Bandits (19-14), Racers (16-17)
Next Game: 7:35 p.m., Friday, Rosemont Stadium

Monica Abbott has been flirting with a perfect game all season.

Abbott stated that she’s been close a few occasions, but couldn’t find a way to pull through with the astonishing pitching feat.
Thursday night at Rosemont Stadium, she didn’t flirt with a perfect game: she threw one.

Abbot threw the first perfect game in the history of Rosemont Stadium as the Chicago Bandits defeated the Akron Racers 5-0.

From the first inning, it was clearly evident that Abbott meant business, as the left hander struck out the first three Racers.
Walking back to the opposing dugout would be a continuous trend for Racer hitters Thursday night.

With every outstanding pitching performance, there seems to always be a special defensive play that keeps a perfect game intact, and that moment came early.

In the top of the second inning, Racers second baseman Nichole Pauly smacked an Abbott pitch to right field, but Bandits right fielder Alexis Jager made a remarkable diving catch.

Tammy Williams jolted the Bandits offense leading the game off with solo home run off of Racers starting pitcher Lisa Norris.
After leaving three base runners on through the first two innings, the Bandits offense would surge in the bottom of the third inning with four runs.

The inning started off with Bandits third baseman Alisa Goler hitting a ball right over Racers shortstop Courtney Bures, where Goler would eventually be relieved on the base paths by Kristin Shifflett.

After left fielder Megan Wiggins drew a walk, the ducks were certainly sitting on the pond and the Bandits would capitalize.
Bandits designated player Nikki Nemitz blasted a 3-2 offering from Norris to dead center and put her team up 4-0.

Later in the inning, Jager would draw a walk, and would score on quite the break.

With two outs, Bandits center fielder Caitlin Lever would hit a ball out to center field, and it looked like a routine catch for Racers outfielder Sharonda McDonald.

Yet that wouldn’t be the case, as the ball hit McDonald’s glove, and Jager would score to pad the Bandits lead to 5-0.
From there, Abbott would take over, and the rest would be history on a special night for the Bandits.

The Bandits and Racers will play the second game of a four-game series at 7:35 p.m. Friday night at Rosemont Stadium.
