MILWAUKEE, WIS. – The Stratford Brakettes, the 2002 ASA Women's Major Fastpitch National Champions, scored a 5-2 win over the All-Star team from National Pro Fastpitch in a battle of unbeaten softball teams here Wednesday (June 18) at Helfaer Field next to Miller Park.

The NPF All-Stars entered the game with a 3-0 mark after winning games in California and Minnesota while the Brakettes were 6-0 after doubleheaders last week in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New York. The women’s pro fastpitch game was part of the Milwaukee Brewers’ “Women on Wednesday” program at Miller Park that also featured a morning clinic where 151 participates were tutored by the NPF All-Stars at Helfaer Field.

After battling to a 0-0 tie in regulation, the NPF All-Stars had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as centerfielder Danielle Cox (Florida State) was thrown out at home plate on a close call. After a potential wild pitch by Danielle Henderson (4-0, Massachusetts), catcher Germaine Fairchild (Tulsa) retrieved the ball and threw out Cox with the Brakette pitcher applying the tag.

NPF pitcher Tarrah Beyster (1-1 Oregon State) held the Brakettes in check through eight and 1/3 innings before a triple by first baseman Kellie Wilkerson (Mississippi State) and a single by Fairchild produced the first two runs for Stratford. After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, an error by shortstop Allison Andrade (Arizona) set up a three-run home run by third baseman Erica Sobel (Maine) to give the Brakettes a 5-0 lead.

The NPF, who had only five hits against Kaci Clark (UCLA) and Henderson, cut the lead to 5-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on first baseman Erika Hanson’s (Arizona) two-run single. Cox’s grounder forced Hanson at second to end the game.

Henderson pitched the final five innings to earn the win. Beyster gave up seven hits before being relieved by Amy Kyler (Cleveland State) in the ninth. Beyster walked only one batter while striking out three. Fairchild and NPF third baseman Jaime Foutch each had two hits Wednesday as Foutch raised her average to .692 this season (nine for 13).

“Wednesday’s game was a showcase for outstanding fastpitch talent. The Brakettes’ experience and togetherness for the past month paid off for them today,” said NPF Coach Tim Kiernan. “It was game where the Brakettes’ pitching was the difference as Tarrah (Beyster) tired late in her first major test. Clark and Henderson are experienced pitchers and Beyster was up to the challenge through eight innings. Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to see them when we are in New England later this season.”

While most of the NPF all-stars head west for two weeks of training, clinics, appearances and games in the Denver-area as part of promotions with the Colorado Rockies, the Detroit Tigers will host six NPF All-Stars Saturday (June 21) for a clinic for the Major League Baseball franchise, "Think Detroit" and the Detroit Youth Sports and Rec Commission.

Saturday’s “free” clinic starts at 10 a.m. and will be limited to 70 participants, who must pre-register by telephoning 313/833-1600. The clinic will feature a general skills program and a specialized fundamental session for pitching and hitting plus lunch with the nation’s top women softball players.

Heading the list of NPF All-Stars for the clinic are Beyster, catcher Shauna Briggs (Texas Tech), shortstop Kara Brun (Arizona State), Foutch, second baseman Lisa Iancin (Cal-Berkeley) and designated hitter Scia Maumausolo (Cal State-Northridge).

The 13-woman NPF All-Star team will play Colorado exhibition games June 26 in Boulder, June 28-29 in Westminster and July 1 in Fort Collins. In addition to the games, fans will be able to part take in festivities around Northern Colorado, including clinics, and a “meet and greet” social function before the Colorado Rockies game at Coors Field June 30.

The Milwaukee stop of the 2003 NPF All-Star tour was part of a nation-wide tour visiting 17 cities this summer. The tour will partner with Major League Baseball Clubs in 12 of those cities. Official league play is scheduled to begin early summer, 2004.

National Pro Fastpitch is the only professional women’s fastpitch softball league in the U.S. Major League Baseball is the official development Partner of NPF. The league is headquartered in Denver, Colo., and has been in operation since 1997 under the names Women’s Pro Fastpitch (WPF) and Women’s Professional Softball League (WPSL).

In an effort to increase the involvement of baseball and softball in the inner city, the Detroit Tigers, Think Detroit, and Youth Sports and Recreation Commission thought it would be very appropriate to also provide professional development for players as well.
