Diamonds Drop Game 2 To The Racers

By:
Greenville, SC- Despite a late rally, the Carolina Diamonds came up just short of defeating the Akron Racers  by a score of 9-7 in the 2nd game of a 4 game series.

Carolina fell behind early by a score of 3-0 then rebounded to tie the score in the bottom half of the first after several Akron miscues. This situation was eerily similar to last night’s game in which there was a 3-3 tie after the first inning as well. Diamond’s starter Angel Bunner struggled in the first and second innings, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits.

Akron hit the ball extremely well, lead by Nicole Pauly who went 3-4 with a home run and 3 RBI. The Diamonds showed signs of life after a Bianca Mejia home run in the 4th to cut the Racer lead to 3. However, Akron would get that run back in the next inning to shut down the Carolina momentum. Akron scored in all but 2 innings, putting the pressure on the Diamond offense who remained relatively quiet until the 7th inning.

With 1 out in the 7th, Jami Lobpries homered to left field followed by a Rachel Folden walk then a no doubter home run to left center from Rookie Kelsi Weseman  cut the lead to 2 at 9-7. Just when any fan would expect the fireworks to be over, Bianca Mejia jumped on a fastball from Hillary Bach and sent it off the fence in left center for a double. That would bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Sara Plourde. Plourde tried to fight off a pitch in on the hands and gave a short pop up to 3rd to allow Akron to end the threat and get the victory.

Kristina Thorson picked up the win for the Racers as they moved to 9-13 on the year. Angel Bunner took the loss for Carolina, who droped to 8-13 on the season. The two teams will continue the series tomorrow at 7pm at CMC Northeast Field in Kannapolis, NC.
