Walk-Off Home Run Ties Series At 2-2

Diamonds even their series with the Akron Racers 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning on a walk-off Home Run by Bianca Mejia.

Akron Racers gave newly-signed Erin Arevalo out of University of Georgia her first professional start.  Arevalo pitched a tough game striking out 7 and only issuing 3 walks but in the end took her first professional loss.

Diamonds score early in the bottom of the 1st inning when Villarreal crosses the plate on a passed ball after stealing a base making 1-0.

Akron scored in the top of the 3rd inning on a passed ball error to even the game at 1-1.

Diamonds go up by one run again in the bottom of the 5th inning.  Arevalo started the inning by walking Villarreal, Weseman singled, and Folden (League leading average of .404) drove in Villarreal on her single up the middle.

Akron answered in the top of the 6th inning scoring one making it 2-2.  Burkhart issued a walk to Marder who was then replaced with Bush as a pinch runner.  Castillo hit a huge double which bounced off the center field fence at 220’ scoring Bush.

It took extra innings to decide the game.  In the top of the 8th inning, Modglin drives one deep center just short of the fence but Quiocho fields it for the Diamonds.

The bottom of the 8th inning started with Locke grounding out which brought up Mejia.  Mejia fouls off the first pitch and takes the second pitch for a strike.  Standing in the box on a 0-2 count and tied score, Mejia drives one well over the right center fence for a game winning walk off Home Run.

Final score 3-2.  Burkhart completes the game for the Diamonds and is now 6-5.  Arevalo is 0-1.

Tonight’s game also makes a 4-way tie for 2nd place in Home Runs for the League with: Diamonds Folden, Mejia and Weseman as well as Akron’s Pauly each having 5 Home Runs on the season.  Chicago’s Butler leads the League with 6.
