Bandits Fall In Extra Innings To Diamonds

ROSEMONT, Ill. – After losing the last two games of this four game set against the Carolina Diamonds, the Chicago Bandits looked for a split on Sunday evening at the Ballpark at Rosemont.

Both pitchers on the Bandits and Diamonds entered the circle for the second time this series as Abbott (9-1) got the call for the Bandits while Bunner (3-5) was in for the Diamonds.

Alisa Goler’s double down the right field line put the Bandits on the board first in the bottom of the third bringing Vicky Galindo and Megan Wiggins home for a 2-0 lead.

Rachel Folden stayed hot at the plate for the Diamonds, hitting her second home run of the series in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2.

The Bandits added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth after Danielle Zymkowitz scored on a wild pitch and a sac fly by Wiggins to take the 4-2 lead.

Two straight singles by Blanca Mejia and Kelsi Weseman started the rally for the Diamonds in the top of the seventh.  After Jazlyn Lunceford walked to load the bases, Jami Lobpries hit a single and delivered the game tying run, evening the score at 4-4.

The Bandits found themselves in some trouble in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded but Abbott struck out Amy Hooks to end the Diamonds threatening offense.

The Bandits were unable to capitalize with a runner at first and no outs after Tammy Williams hit a single off the pitcher to open the bottom of the ninth and the game headed into another inning.

With the 10th inning international tie breaker rule in effect, the Diamonds started the tenth inning with a runner on second.  Behind strong pitching by Abbott, the Bandits were able to escape the inning and remained tied at four heading into the bottom of the tenth.

Shannon Doepking was placed on second for the Bandits in their half of the tenth and advanced off a sacrifice bunt by Galindo.  However the Bandits were unable to capitalize, as Bunner retired the next two batters forcing another inning.

With Mejia already placed on second, Lobpries’ single to right field gave the Diamonds a 5-4 lead in the top of the 11th inning. The Bandits were able to get out of the top of the 11th with a one run deficit as   Amber Patton was placed on second and advanced to third off a sac fly by Wiggins. However, they were unable to capitalize as the game ended in the Diamonds favor with a 5-4 victory.

The Bandits return to action on Thursday, August 26 when they travel to Florida to take on the USSSA Pride.

They will return home to face the Carolina Diamonds on Wednesday, August 15 at 7:35 p.m.
