Veteran Pitching, Hot Bats Lead Racers to Come Back Win

2014 NPF Season

Akron, OH – June 10, 201
4 -The Akron Racers came from behind to win the last game of their series against the Chicago Bandits. Lisa Norris made her first start of the season, and went 5 innings and gave up 5 runs on 8 hits.

The Bandits scored on Norris early, on an Emily Allard double, a Tammy Williams single and a passed ball. The Racers responded with 2 runs in their half of the first, when Bandits starter Sara Moulton walked Nerissa Myers and Brianna Cherry. After Nadia Taylor singled to load the bases, the Racers put two on the board with Jessica Garcia’s RBI single.

Cheyenne Coyle gave the Bandits another run in the second on a solo home run. Neither team scored again until the fifth inning, when Alisa Goler drove in a run with a bases loaded single to short. Norris walked in a run and Hernandez hit a sac fly to left, to give the Bandits a 5-2 lead.

“I felt a lot better tonight,” said Norris. “My spins were a lot better and I hit my spots better than I did last night. We just have to keep working, keep hitting and keep playing good softball.”

The Racers provided some support with two runs of their own off of Bandits reliever Estella Pinon. Taylor Schlopy walked, and Nerissa Myers singled to short, before Briana Cherry hit a hard ground ball past Bandits shortstop Tammy Williams to drive in both runs.

Rachele Fico came in to relieve Norris and gave up a solo home run to Williams, but didn’t allow any other runs on the evening.

Fico got the win after the Racers bats lit up off of reliever Ellen Renfroe. Williams committed an error, allowing Kelley Montalvo to reach first, and a single from Jenny Gilbert set the plate for Ashley Thomas. Thomas doubled, driving in both runs, and then scored the winning run on Jill Barrett’s single to short right field.

The Racers return to action against the Pennsylvania Rebellion at Firestone Stadium on Thursday, June 12 at 7:05. For more information about the Akron Racers, visit www.akronracers.org or call (330) 376-8188.
