Akron, OH – August 1, 2014 - The Akron Racers jumped on the Pennsylvania Rebellion pitching staff early and never looked back, dominating 15-0 behind a strong performance by starting pitcher Alison Owen.
Owen threw her first career shutout for the Racers, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings with 4 strikeouts.
“[Catcher Jessica Garcia] did a great job behind the plate calling pitches and she was really smart with [how to attack] the batters,” Owen said. “We just worked on our spins and trying to keep the ball off the plate.”
The Racers plated three runs in the first inning, four in the second, three in the third, two in the fifth and four in the sixth as it didn’t matter which Rebellion pitcher was on the mound. Six runs were charged to starting pitcher Dallas Escobedo, three to Angel Bunner, two to Anna Miller and four to Tatum Edwards.
“I always try to have fun with it every time I pitch,” Owen said. 15 runs of support made it easy. “The hitters had really good swings tonight. They did a really good job.”
Left fielder Jennifer Gilbert went out in style in her last game of the season before she joins Canada for the Softball World Cup. After hitting an RBI triple in the 1st inning she added a 3-run home run in the 6th.
“It’s awesome,” Gilbert said. “I’ve been waiting for it all season but I’m glad that my last game for the summer ended this way. [Playing for the Racers] has made me a much better player. I was seeing the ball really well and I’ll be much better prepared for Team Canada.”
Racers’ batters contributed from everywhere up and down the lineup. Jill Barrett hit an RBI single and two sac flies. Nerissa Myers doubled, singled and walked. Ashley Thomas was 2-2 with an RBI.
But the Racers did their most damage with the long ball as Garcia, Charlotte Morgan, Schlopy and Gilbert all went deep.
The display of power moved the Racers to 17-20 on the season as they will return to Firestone Stadium tonight at 7:05 PM ET to continue their series with the Rebellion.
