RACERS DROP TWO TO HEAT BUT HOLD ONTO SECOND PLACE

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Racers were unable to hold on to an early lead as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Arizona Heat on Saturday afternoon at Firestone Stadium. The Racers fell to the Heat 2-1 in game one and lost 5-0 in the nightcap.

In game one, Racers center fielder Iyhia McMichael jumped on Heat starter Monica Triner in the top of the first inning. In the first at-bat of the game, McMichael took Triner’s pitch deep over the fence in left-center field for her fourth home run of the season, giving Akron a lead it would hold until the sixth inning. McMichael was named the Custom Sports Imprints Player of the game for her strong offensive performance.

The Heat finally got to Akron starter Brandee McArthur in the sixth inning when designated player Tarrah Beyster reached on and error and scored an unearned run to knot the score at 1-1. Arizona took the lead and the game in the top of the eighth inning when center fielder Cheryl Bolding led-off the extra frame with a solo home run off Racers reliever Radara McHugh.

McArthur pitched six strong innings for the Racers, surrendering no unearned runs on only two hits. McArthur also struck out two, but did not earn a decision.

The Racers were unable to get on the board against former Akron pitcher Danielle Henderson in game two. McMichael led off the game with a line single to left, finishing the game one-for-two with a walk to be named the Custom Sports Imprints Player of the Game.

Game-two starter, Nikki Myers, followed-up her no-hit performance on Thursday night with another strong outing in the pitcher’s circle on Saturday. Myers scattered four hits, but gave up four earned runs – three of which came on a Bolding home run in the fifth inning.

Akron fans were treated to a stellar defensive showing by right fielder Trena Peel, who made spectacular catches in each of the Racers two games, twice garnering the Summa Health Care Systems Play of the Game award. In game one, Peel made a catch at the fence in the gap in right-center field to rob Bolding of a home run.

The Racers are next in action as they travel to New England for three regularly scheduled games against the Riptide, and to finish a suspended game that began on June 11. The Racers will return to Firestone Stadium in Akron to host the entire 2004 National Pro Fastpitch playoff and championship series from August 25-29.
