Arizona Heat Sign Their Third Gold Medalist

Tucson, AZ – The Arizona Heat of National Pro Fastpitch League is proud to announce the signing of Jessica Mendoza, the third member from the 2004 USA Olympic Gold Medal Team to join the Heat for 2005. Mendoza will join Lovie Jung and Tairia Mims-Flowers as Gold Medal winners on the Heat roster, along with 11 other NCAA All-Americans.

Mendoza is one of the most decorated female softball players in the game. She played her collegiate ball at Stanford University, leading the Cardinal to their first ever Women’s College World Series in 2001.

Jessica was a four-time All-American and also received the Pac-10 Player of the Year Award in 2000. At Palo Alto, Mendoza reeked havoc on the record books, holding the school records in several offensive categories.

Jessica currently owns the top three single season Stanford records in: batting average, hits, home runs, runs scored and stolen bases. Mendoza is also the Cardinal career leader in batting average (.416), hits (327), home runs (50), doubles (70), runs scored (230) and stolen bases (86). She currently ranks second in runs batted in, walks, and at-bats.

In Athens, Mendoza was a key player for the USA Olympic Team winning the Gold Medal. She started in the Outfield for all nine Olympic Games, in which the United States outscored their opponents 51-1 in route to a 9-0 record.

Jessica is currently on the Board of Directors for the National Education Association and Board of Trustees for the Women’s Sports Foundation. She also donates much of her time to the Mexican American community in Los Angeles.

The Heat also announced the signing of former Arizona State All-American infielder, Phelan Wright. Wright was a three-time All-American for the Sun Devils from 2002-2004, and the school’s all-time leader in batting average and home runs.

In addition to these signings, the Heat is negotiating with another Olympian for the 2005 season.
