Heat Putout Flames with 15 Run Outburst

Box Score
Tucson, Ari -- The Arizona Heat started the season off with an impressive offensive and pitching display. Dana Sorensen struck out 11 over her complete game performance and held the Flames to just two runs in a 15-2 victory.

Sorensen gave up two first inning runs, before shutting out the Flames over the final six frames. At the plate, the Heat bats got started in the first, and did not stop after that. They scored at least one run in every inning, including four in the fourth. Most of the damage was done on homeruns by Tairia Flowers, Lauren Bauer and Tara Knudsen. All three hit three-run homeruns.

Lead-off hitter Lauren Bauer went five for five in her National Pro Fastpitch debut, with four runs and three RBI. Erica Beach, the Heat’s designated player went three-for-three with two runs batted in and two walks. At the games end, eight of the nine Heat players got at least one hit, and six had multiple hit performances.
The Flames took the lead in the top of the first with a two-run homerun by former Arizona Wildcat catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest.

The Heat did not waste any time battling back in the bottom of the first with three consecutive singles, before a wild pitch allowed Lauren Bauer to score. Toni Mascarenas followed with an RBI single, and the Heat tied the score at two.

After giving up two in the top of the first, the Heat scored the final 15 runs of the game. Lauren Bauer’s homerun in the third made the score 8-2, and Tara Knudsen capped off four straight Heat hits with a three-run homerun of her own. The final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth on a two run single by Erica Beach.

The Heat and Flames will face off again on Friday at 7:30 pm for the second game of this four game series.
