Sorensen Tosses No-Hitter in Series Finale

Tucson, Ari.-- The Arizona Heat completed the sweep of the Phoenix Flames with a 15-0 win at Hi Corbett Field. Dana Sorensen followed up her complete game on Thursday, by hurling a no-hitter on Sunday. Sorensen struck out nine Flames batters and did not allow a ball out of the infield the whole night.

The Heat batters did not let Sorensen steal the spotlight, posting 15 runs for the second time in the series. Phelan Wright crushed a grand slam in the second inning, finishing the night two for four with four RBI. After a three for four debut on Friday night, Jessica Mendoza went three for four again, with a double, homerun, stolen base and four RBI. Eight of the nine Heat starters had at least one hit, and seven had multiple hit performances. All nine starters scored at least one run.

The Heat were held scoreless in the first, but exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of a grand slam by Phelan Wright. A few batters later, Jessica Mendoza singled home Nichole Thompson, and the Heat never looked back. That was not the last time Mendoza would be heard from, doubling off the wall in the third, homering in the fifth, and hitting a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Mendoza finished the series six for eight, with two doubles, a homerun, two stolen bases, and six RBI.

Lovie Jung and Ladonia Hughes added three hits apiece as the Heat finished the night with 19 as a team.

The Heat outscored the Flames 37-2 in the three game series, and held the Flames scoreless in the last 20 innings of the series. The only two Flames runs in the series came in the first inning of Thursday night’s game on a homerun by Mackenzie Vandergeest.

The Heat will host their first National Pro Fastpitch opponent next week, when the Akron Races come to town boasting three Olympians of their own. The series will start Thursday at 7:30 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
