Former Arizona State Standout Delivers in Extra Innings

TEMPE, ARIZ. – On a night when she was proposed to at home plate, Kara Brun not only accepted Jason Garcia’s offer but she also singled home the game’s only run in leading the NPF All-Stars to a 1-0 win in extra innings here Thursday (July 10) over the Arizona Majestic Stars at Farrington Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University.

One of ASU’s all-time great softball players, Brun’s one-out hit in the bottom of the ninth inning scored right fielder Erika Hanson (Arizona) from third base with the winning run. Hanson led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on leftfielder Lauren Bauer’s (Arizona) sacrifice bunt. After another infield single by pinch hitter Lisa Iancin (Cal-Berkeley), Brun single to right field scored Hanson.

Amy Kyler (Cleveland State) won the pitching duel over Erica Beach (Arizona State) as the NPF right-hander picked up her seventh win this season in eight decisions. Kyler gave up only three hits in her nine innings of work as she recorded her fourth shutout this season.

Kyler, who retired the last seven Majestic Star batters in the game, struck out 12 while walking three. The Majestic Stars biggest threat was in the fourth inning as the visiting team left Nancy Evans (Arizona) stranded at third. Evans had one of the three Majestic hits as she also walked. For the season, Kyler has struck out 92 of the 175 batters she has faced as she lowered her earned run average to 0.65.

Beach, who ranks second on ASU’s career pitching wins list with 79, gave up eight hits with three being in the ninth inning. She struck out seven while walking three. Brun and catcher Lindsey Collins had two hits each for the NPF squad. In fact, both of Brun’s came after Garcia’s sixth inning proposal in front of the 671 Farrington fans.

Arizona State’s all-time career leader in home runs and runs batted in, Brun was a finalist for National Player of the Year honors in 2002 and earned All-PAC-10 honors throughout her career. With her two hits Thursday, Brun is batting .366 for the NPF All-Stars with a team high 10 runs scored. She also has eight runs-batted-in.

The same two teams will play in Tucson Friday in a 7:30 p.m. game at Hillenbrand Stadium on the campus of the University of Arizona where Evans, a Wildcat assistant coach, is scheduled to pitch against the NPF’s Tarrah Beyster (Oregon State). Beyster is 4-1 this season for the NPF squad with three shutouts and a 0.69 earned run average.

The NPF All-Stars end their five days of appearances, clinics and games at Hillenbrand Stadium Saturday morning with a clinic before heading back east to participate in the John Hancock All-Star Fanfest in Chicago, Ill. Tickets for Friday’s game are $7.50 for adults, $5 for seniors (55 and up) and $3 for children (12 and under).

One of the two losses for the NPF All-Stars was a 5-2 extra-inning decision in Milwaukee to the Stratford Brakettes of Connecticut, the 2002 American Softball Association (ASA) national champions. The Fort Collins Buckaroos defeated the NPF team 1-0 in pool play at the Triple Crown Sparkler event, but the All-Stars avenged the setback with a 9-1 win in the title game.
