Heat Pound Out 15 Hits En Route to Fifth Straight

Tucson, Ariz.-- The Arizona Heat finished off the sweep of Venezuela with a 10-2 victory over the National Team at Hi Corbett Field. Dana Sorensen overcame some early problems to shutdown the Venezuelan bats, while the Heat's sticks caught fire. Arizona found itself trailing for the first time in the series, but quickly responded with 10 unanswered runs to close out the contest.

Sorensen tossed a complete game to pick up her second win of the series,
and fourth of the season. She allowed only five hits and the two runs while striking out eight.

Sorensen found herself in early trouble, when the Venezuelan hitters were finding the gaps. Maria Soto led off the top of the second with a single to right field. After Sorensen struck out the next two batters, May Ocanto smacked a double off the centerfield wall to put two runners in scoring position.

Maribel Riera followed with a double of her own to left-center field to put the Venezuelan team up 2-0. This was the first time in the four games that the team had led the Heat, but that would not last very long.

In the bottom of the second, Lovie Jung led off with a double down the left field line and Tara Knudsen followed with a single to put runners on the corners. After retiring the next batter, Venezuelan pitcher Maria Castellanos walked Cheryl Schaefer to load the bases. Red hot Ladonia Hughes hit the first pitch into right field to put the Heat on the board.

Castellanos retired the next batter and Nichole Thompson stepped up to the plate. Thompson coming off a three for three night, took the Castellanos offering and drove it off the center field wall to clear the bases and put the Heat up 4-2.

It was much of the same in the bottom of the third, as the Heat added five more runs thanks to seven hits. Lovie Jung, Tara Knudsen, and Phelan Wright led off the inning with three straight singles to load the bases.

Jung and Wright finished the night with two hits apiece and Knudsen finished with three.

Schaefer followed with a sacrifice fly before Ladonia Hughes doubled, driving in two runs. Lauren Bauer followed with a double to drive in Hughes.

Thompson then singled to move Bauer to third, who later scored on a Toni Mascarenas single, and the Heat led 9-2.

The final Heat run came in the fifth when Lauren Bauer hit her second homerun of the season to straight-away center field. Bauer ended the night two for four with a double, homerun, and two RBI.

Nichole Thompson finished the series going eight for eleven with two doubles, six RBI, three stolen bases, and three walks. She also reached base successfully 10 of her last 11 at-bats.

Ladonia Hughes also had an outstanding series, going seven for eleven with six RBI.

The Heat will be back in action Thursday at 7:30 when Jennie Finch and the Chicago Bandits come to Hi Corbett Field for a four game series.
