Wright's Four Hits and Schaefer's Four RBI Pace Heat

Tucson, Ariz.-- Phelan Wright and Cheryl Schaefer led the Heat offense as they pounded out a season high 19 hits in a 12-0 win over the Phoenix Flames. Wright led the way by going four for four with an RBI, while Scheafer went three for three with four RBI and three doubles.

One night after one hitting the Flames, Erica Beach and Randi Nielson once again combined to toss a shutout, this time yielding only four hits.

Beach started the game and tossed a perfect three innings, striking out two, and not allowing a ball out of the infield. She was relieved in the fourth by Randi Nielson who shut down the Flames for the final four innings to pick up the victory. Nielson picked up her first win, allowing only four singles, and striking out three. Neither pitcher allowed a walk, and combined to throw only 65 pitches on the night.

The Heat did not waste any time getting started Friday night. Lauren Bauer led off the game with a single to right. Lovie Jung singled Bauer over to third, and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position.

Stacey Nuveman followed with a sacrifice fly to left and the Heat led 1-0. Tairia Flowers singled in another run and the inning ended with the Heat leading 2-0.

With Beach mowing down batter after batter, the Heat added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Mendoza.

In the third, Toni Mascarenas got the Heat rally started with a one out double to left, before Jackie Coburn and Phelan Wright singled.

Mascarenas came around to score on the Wright single to push the Heat lead to 4-0. Cheryl Schaefer doubled to the right field corner, driving in two runs and stretching the lead even more.

The Heat added three more in the fourth. After a Jung double, Flames pitcher Jeannie Ray walked Nuveman and gave up an RBI single to Coburn.

Schaefer followed with her second two-run double of the night and the Heat led 9-0. Bauer added an RBI double in the sixth, and Jessica Mendoza hit a two-run homer to cap off the scoring for the night.

Mendoza’s homerun was her team leading fourth and her three RBI pushed her team high to 15.

Six Heat batters had multi-hit games, with Wright leading the way with four. Bauer, Jung and Schaefer had three hits a piece, and combined for six doubles. Coburn and Flowers had two hits a piece and Nuveman walked three times on the night. The team also set a Heat record with seven doubles in the game.

Jackie Vasquez and Jessica Ellison had two hits a piece for the Flames, accounting for all of the teams hits.

The Heat and Flames will play game three of this five game series Saturday night at 7:30 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
