Beach Tosses Shutout, Heat Win 9-0

The Arizona Heat made it six straight wins, with a 9-0 shutout of the California Sunbirds. Erica Beach tossed her seventh complete game of the season, holding the Sunbirds to only two hits. Lauren Bauer and Jessica Mendoza led the Heat offense, combining for four hits and four RBIs.

Beach pitched her second complete game shutout of the season, with the first one coming on May 27th against the Phoenix Flames. Much like the first shutout, Beach allowed only two singles. She also struck out a season high 10 batters and did not walk a single Sunbird. Beach extended her scoreless inning streak to 26 innings, dating back to June 26th.

The Heat offense did not waste any time getting going, plating one run in the first. Jessica Mendoza singles to left, and proceeded to steal second and move to third on a passed ball. Mendoza was able to score when Tairia Flowers hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and the Heat led 1-0.

In the second, the Heat loaded the bases thanks to a single by Jackie Coburn and walks by Nichole Thompson and Cheryl Schaefer. Lead off hitter Lauren Bauer smacked a double into the left field corner scoring two, and the Heat led 3-0.

The bats did not stop in the third, as the Heat scored four more times.
Flowers and Stacey Nuveman led off the inning with back to back singles to put two runners on. After a fielder’s choice, a error by centerfielder Whitney Kroh allowed Toni Mascarenas to reach, and loaded the bases.
Sunbirds pitcher Eileen Canney retired the next batter, but Nichole Thompson reach on a error which scored a run. With the Heat up 4-0, a balk brought in the fifth run. After a walk, the Bauer and Mendoza each singled in a run and the inning ended with the Heat up 7-0.

The Heat scored two more in the sixth on a single by Nuveman and a sacrifice fly by Jackie Coburn.

Lauren Bauer led the Heat offense by going two for four with three RBIs.
Jessica Mendoza continued her hot hitting, finished two for three with two runs, two steals and a RBI.

Beach improved to 7-5 on the season, breaking her own Heat record for wins in a season. Sunbirds pitcher Eileen Canney received the loss after allowing seven runs, three earned, in three innings of work. Meagan Denny came on in relief and allowed two runs in three innings.

The Heat and Sunbirds will face off again tomorrow night for the second game of the series. Game time is 7:30 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
