Heat Rally Past Mexico, Take First Game 4-3

TUCSON, ARIZ – The Arizona Heat overcame an early lead, to beat the Mexican National Team in a dramatic come from behind victory. The Heat took the first game of the scheduled doubleheader by a score of 4-3, despite trailing 3-1 after the third. Nichole Thompson drove home the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth with a two out single to centerfield.

Aja Sherman started for the Heat, going four strong innings and allowing only one earned run. Sherman allowed three hits, walked two and struck out four. Erica Beach came on in relief to toss three scoreless innings, allowing only a pair of walks. Beach also struck out a pair and picked up her team leading eleventh win of the season.

The Heat pushed across the first run of game in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch by Mexican pitcher Pamela Mendoza. Ladonia Hughes led off with a single and promptly stole second. She advanced to third on a fly ball and came around to score on the wild pitch, giving the Heat a 1-0 lead.

The Mexican team came right back in the top of the second, scoring a run on a RBI triple by Paola Rubio. In the top of the third they would add two more. After a walk by Krystal Marquez, Jackie Vasquez reached on an error, advancing both runners into scoring position. With two out, Roxanne Struble dropped a base hit into right field scoring two runners and giving the Mexican team a 3-1 lead.

The Heat cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by Nichole Thompson. Still trailing by one, Phelan Wright led off the fourth with a single and came around to score when pitcher Aja Sherman doubled to the leftfield corner. With the game still knotted in the bottom of the sixth the Heat got their bats going once again. Ladonia Hughes drew a two out walk and was followed by a single off the bat of Cheryl Schaefer. Nichole Thompson stepped in with the winning run in scoring position. She delivered with a single up the middle scoring Hughes on a close play at the plate. Leading by one, Beach retired the Mexican team in the seventh giving the Heat a 4-3 victory.

Ladonia Hughes and Nichole Thompson each had a pair of hits for the Heat.
Hughes finished two for three with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Thompson finished two for four with two RBIs, including the game winner.

Roxanne Struble had two her teams’ three hits, including a two run single in the third. Pamela Mendoza started the game and went four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. She was relieved by Marissa Marzan who went two innings allowing only one run, but picking up the loss.
