All-Stars pick up victory behind strong performance by Amy Kyler

For Immediate Release - July 25, 2003

National Pro Fastpitch Partners with MLB Reds on Ohio Tour

AKRON, OHIO – The All-Stars from National Pro Fastpitch used a four-run first inning and 14 strikeouts from former Cleveland State pitcher Amy Kyler to score a 5-1 victory over the Ohio College Stars improving the team season record to 12-3.

Shortstop Allison Andrade (Arizona) got the first inning going for the All-Stars with a one out walk, which was followed up by a single from Jaime Foutch (Oklahoma State). On the play the Ohio College Star centerfielder, Danielle Fincham (Kent State) bobbled the ball allowing Andrade to score from first base. Leading the hitting attack on the night for the NPFers was Lisa Iancin, who finished the night with two base hits, one RBI and one run scored.

The NPF Stars hit through the lineup in the bottom of the first inning, using three hits, two walks by the College Stars’ starting pitcher Shelby Howell (Akron) and two big errors by the defense to score their four runs. The NPF All-Stars would eventually tack on their fifth and final run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The four runs scored in the first inning were all that the Ohio native and current Akron resident Kyler needed as she cruised to her eighth win in 10 decisions. On the night, Kyler gave up only three hits and one unearned run in the top of the third-inning, while striking out 14 College Stars. The 14 strikeouts were one below her season-high of 15 and they bring her season total to 109 in 67.2 innings pitched.

The NPF All-Stars, who have now won 12 of 15 games this summer, will play a doubleheader tomorrow at 11am and 1pm at Firestone Stadium in Akron before heading to Boston and Lowell for five days of activities in Massachusetts. Major League Baseball and the Boston Red Sox will host the collection of All-Stars for appearances, clinics and games in Lowell.

Tonight’s game marked the first game for the NPF All-Stars since a 2-1 loss to the Arizona Majestic Stars on July 11 in Tucson, Arizona. The loss to the Majestic Stars ended a five-game winning streak that dated back to the Triple Crown Sparkler tournament held in Westminster, Colo.

In addition to posting a 12-3 record in games in California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, Tennessee, Phoenix and Tucson this season, the NPF All-Stars have hosted clinics and made appearances at Major League Baseball games in San Francisco, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix, Chicago and Cincinnati.

National Pro Fastpitch is the only professional women's fastpitch softball league in the United States. Major League Baseball is the official development Partner of NPF. The league is headquartered in Denver, Colo., and has been in operation since 1997 under the names Women's Pro Fastpitch (WPF) and Women's Professional Softball League (WPSL).
