Bandits' Bats Win Against St.Louis

Lisle, Ill. – The Chicago Bandits returned to the field with their bats still warmed up from the previous night’s game where they had 15 hits, but the 8 hits this game were enough to bring the Bandits to another win against the St.Louis Saints 7-0.

Bandits pitcher Lauren Bay was back in the circle after her phenomenal performance against the week before against her own country’s elite team, Canada. In the five innings Bay pitched, she recorded 7 strikeouts, walking one, and only giving up one hit.

Christina Enea started up the action in the bottom of the second when she took first on a called ball four. Enea capitalized on the situation by stealing second base and continued on to take third after the throw was fumbled by the shortstop and drifted into centerfield.

When Laura Harms laid down a perfect bunt right in front of the plate, the pitcher Melissa Massey threw it first but not before Harms made it to first and Enea made it home. This put the first run on the board as the Bandits led 1-0.

Once they got started, the Bandits could not stop in the third inning. Just as they did in the game the night before, the Bandits batted around the order in this single inning. As a team they produced 6 hits and 6 runs. Hits were provided by Anne Steffan, Vicky Galindo, Jaime Clark (with a double), Jennie Finch, Selena Collins, and Harms.

Voted “Player of the Game,” Harms hit a triple this round and went 2-3 with 3 RBI’s for the night. Steffan also recorded her 19th stolen base of the season.

Jen Bruck had the first hit of the game for St.Louis with a drive up the middle in the fourth inning. The Saints failed to execute and did not have another baserunner until the sixth inning when Sonya Ryhers came into the game with a hit.

In the sixth inning Chicago made several changes to their lineup that changed the pace of the game for a bit. The Saints made a threat to the Bandits when they loaded the bases with no outs.

Ryhed started off the rally with a single to the left side. Bridget Fournie reached on the one and only error for the Bandits and Ashley Heady walked the bases loaded. The Bandits stopped the Saints before they created any damage with a fielder’s choice to home followed by two caught fly balls.

One of the fly balls was hit to short rightfield where Bay relocated to when Amy Harre took her place in the circle. Both Bay and second baseman Liz Bouck went for the ball until the very end when Bouck backed off. Bay luckily had caught the ball but her momentum continued her forward to practically “leap-frog” over Bouck. With bases loaded, Bay gunned the ball home to ensure no runs were scored.

In the six innings Saints Massey pitched, she gave up 8 hits and 6 earned runs with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Bandits relief Harre had two strikeouts, one walk, and gave up one hit in the two innings she pitched.
