Lead-off Homerun Enough for Thunder in 1-0 Win

A night after the Heat pulled off a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Thunder, the visitors got their revenge with a 1-0 win of their own. Kim Nesloney led off the game with a solo homerun that would prove to be the only run of the ballgame. Erica Beach and Amanda Freed battled for seven innings, with Freed finishing on the winning end.

Freed pitched a complete game shutout to pick up her eighth win of the season. She allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out three. Beach rebounded from her lone mistake to allow only the one run on five hits. She uncharacteristically walked three batters and finished with three strikeouts. After winning her last five starts, Beach fell to 14-7 with the loss.

The Thunder struck early and the Heat blew an early change as the game would ultimately be decided in the first inning. Kim Nesloney took the second pitch of the game over the right centerfield wall to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Beach escaped further trouble in the inning when Kristen Zaleski was thrown out trying to steal home.

The Heat squandered an opportunity in the first, not being able to push a run across with the bases loaded. Lauren Bauer leadoff the inning with a double to the gap in left centerfield and Nichole Thompson walked to put two on with no outs. Toni Mascarenas sacrificed both runners up a base to give the Heat two runners in scoring position. Freed got Stacey Nuveman looking to get the second out of the inning. After a walk to Jackie Coburn loaded the bases, Tairia Flowers grounded out to shortstop to end the inning. The Heat would not get another runner past first base on the night.

Amanda Freed settled down, allowing a hit in each of the next two innings, but not allowing any runs. After a Stacey Nuveman single in the third, she retired the next thirteen batters to end the game. Erica Beach was just as good after the first, allowing only three hits over the remaining six innings.

Cheryl Schaefer picked up one of the Heat's hits to extend her hitting streak to ten games. The hitting streak is a season high for any Heat player. Stacey Nuveman stretched her hitting streak to seven games with a single in the third.

Kim Nesloney homerun was her first of the season. Kristen Zaleski finished two for three, and stole her league leading thirteenth base of the season.

The Heat and Thunder will play the third game of the series tomorrow night at Hi Corbett Field at 7:30 pm.
