Henderson, Beyster Lead Riptide over Heat

Game Box Score

TUCSON, ARIZ – The New England Riptide won their second game of the season, beating the Arizona Heat 7-1. Two former Heat players led the Riptide attack, one with on the mound and one with the bat. Danielle Henderson threw a complete game and Tarrah Beyster had two hits including a homerun and four RBIs.

Henderson and Heat starter Desiree Serrano squared off in what looked to be a pitchers duel until the fourth inning. Henderson went the distance for the Riptide picking up her first victory of the season. She allowed only one run, while surrendering seven hits and walking four. Serrano tossed her third straight complete game for the Heat, allowing seven runs – seven earned – on nine hits. She walked one and struck out seven.

Serrano and Henderson both came out strong in the early innings. Serrano retired the first nine Riptide she faced including three strikeouts. Henderson allowed six base runners in the first three innings but the Heat could not bring any in to score.

The Riptide got going in the fourth after Lindy Winkler started the inning off with a single to right. She advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and moved to third on a single by Lisa Iancin. Serrano struck out Lyndsey Angus but Heather Scaglione’s throwing error allowed Winkler to score and put the Riptide up 1-0. Beyster followed with a single off the wall scoring Iancin and extending the Riptide lead.

Henderson continued to hold the Heat scoreless while the Riptide bats went back to work in the sixth. With one down in the inning, Kristen Vesely singled and moved to second on a single by Angus. Beyster then delivered a three-run homerun to left to put the Riptide up 5-0.

New England added two more in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Vesely. The Heat got a run across on Henderson in the seventh, but left the bases loaded. Shana Easley led off with a single to left. Two batters later Crystal Farley singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. Nichole Thompson laced a single to right scoring LaDonia Hughes and putting the Heat on the board. After a walk to Jackie Coburn to load the bases, Scaglione flied out to left to end the game.

Crystal Farley had a pair of hits in the game and Nichole Thompson drove in the only run with a single. Jackie Coburn, making her first appearance of the season walked three times. Kaleo Eldredge, the leagues leading hitter coming in went 0-4, ending her eight game hitting streak.

Tarrah Beyster was the hitting star for the Riptide belting a three-run homerun and finishing with four RBIs. Lindy Winkler and Kristen Vesely added two hits apiece with Vesely driving in two runs.

The Heat and Riptide will play again tomorrow night for the second game of the four game series. The game starts at 7:00 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
