Game Box Score
TUCSON, ARIZ The New England Riptide once again bested the Arizona Heat, prevailing 5-1. The Riptide took their second straight game of the series after jumping out to an early lead, holding off several Heat rallies and adding some late insurance runs.
Celena Velasquez fell to 0-5 on the season after giving up two runs in two and two third innings. Jocelyn Forest picked up her second win of the season for the Riptide lasting four and two-thirds innings. She allowed one run on five hits and fanned four. Mariangee Bogado picked up the save pitching two and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
For the second straight night the first few innings looked to have the Heat and Riptide locked in a pitchers duel. Velasquez and Forest cruised through the first two innings, allowing only a hit apiece. However, in the top of the third the Riptide got on the board. Kristin Allain led off the inning with a single and was driven home two batters later on a triple by Lindy Winkler. Kristen Vesely followed with a sacrifice fly to left to push the lead to 2-0.
Heat pitcher LeslieWolfe came on in the third and got out of the inning without allowing either of her inherited runners to score. She did not allow a run in her two and one-third innings, surrendering only one hit and two walks.
The Heat bats got going in the fourth. Nichole Thompson and Jackie Coburn led off the inning with back to back doubles making the score 2-1. However, the Heat would not get the tying run across in the inning as Rebekah Quiroz was thrown out trying to steal third.
In the fourth, the Heat once again looked to tie the score, this time forcing Forest out of the game. After LaDonia Hughes singled and was caught stealing, Kalea Eldredge ripped a two-out single to left. Bogado was called in from the bullpen to relieve Forest and promptly walked Crystal Farley. On the first pitch to Thompson, the ball got passed catcher KJ Kelley and rolled all the way to the backstop. Eldredge tried to score from second but was gunned down at the plate to end the inning.
The Riptide attempted to add some insurance runs in the sixth, getting the first two runners on. The Heat went to Desiree Serrano to end the threat, and that is exactly what she did. Serrano got Lyndsey Angus to fly out and then stuck out Kelley and Frankenstein to end the inning.
Serrano would not fair as well in the seventh as the Riptide added three insurance runs to extend the lead to 5-1. Allian led off the inning and reached on an error. She came around to score on Winklers second triple of the game. Vesely followed with a RBI double and would eventually score on a double by Angus. Bogado closed out the game for her first save, setting down the Heat in the bottom half of the inning.
Nichole Thompson had her fourth multi-hit game of the season for the Heat, including a double and a run scored. Jackie Coburn got her first hit of the season, and finished with a double and a RBI.
Lindy Winkler was the star for the Riptide, ripping two triple and driving in two runs. Lisa Iancin also added a pair of hits and Kristen Vesely drove in a pair of runs.
The Heat and Riptide will play again tomorrow night for the third game of the series. The game starts at 7:00 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
